Report: Mario is biggest videogame franchise ever

A report on the 20 top-selling videogame franchises of all time has pinned Nintendo's Mario at the number one spot, with a total of 193 million sales worldwide.

Published by The Independent, London, the report has put Pokémon in second place with 155 million sales during its lifetime, Final Fantasy following with 68 million. Popular series like The Sims and Grand Theft Auto also appear in the top 10, the former with 54 million sales worldwide and the latter 50 million.

I think Donkey Kong Country sold over 8 millions, but still. I guess Donkey Kong was very succeful for Nintendo back in the NES days. Nintendo has very succeful franchises.

probably because of the amount of mario games....

they take about 10minutes to complete, whereas most final fantasy 10 minutes and your not even begun

heck it was because of mario many people like ME got into gaming

i feel sorry for Final Fantasy though, they've been in existince since 1987, yet even their 10 years extra of existence couldnt beat Pokemon which has been out since 1998, more than 10 years after FF existed....sad really...lol

wow, look at the gap between pokemon and Final Fantasy:eek: If You hae ever been to japan then you now how huge FF is there. OF course in tokyo airport I saw a what looked like a boeing 737 BUT It had a pokemon paintjob one the entire plane, so I understand why pokemon is huge.

Whoever is suprised about the mario sales isnt a gamer. I wonder if they are counting every single game with the word mario in it because that would be about 1000 titles aready lol. Good see final fantasy doing well.

hardly a surprise given the number of sequels the game has spawned, and the general fanboyish-wankfest that goes on with regards to Nintendo stuff, in particular Mario, which imho is one of the least-enjoyable platform games i've ever played....

quite a feat considering i love both platformers and retro games.

This list is SOOOOOO quantity-over-quality. You cannot say that Pokemon is better than Sonic, ever, in the history than ever, and in no way does it ever take the #2 spot instead of Sonic. Sonic rules video games, and quite possibly (and sadly) the only person here who might agree with me is Kaiser.
