chrismulhearn (http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=7426) posted this news:
Hey, I ported Xiptech's mipsnommu version of uClinux-2.4.19 to the PSP. The only hardware support it has currently is the headphone jack's serial port (used by the console and tty implementation), but its a start!
Check it out here: http://df38.dot5hosting.com/~remember/chris/
It mounts a ramdisk as the root filesystem, the root disk image is linked in with the kernel. The disk image has a minimal userland including sh, ls, mkdir, echo, cat, basic stuff like that, built with uClibC. All the executables are statically-linked.
The only way to use it is with some sort of serial port hardware like discussed here: http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=5234
Hopefully more people will help now and we can really turn this into something.
Could this be the start of a real attempt to get Linux on the PSP, well lets hope so :)

Well this isnt emulating anything, so naturally it will run alot better as it is written specifically for the psps processor. Pretty exciting. I would love to see bitchX on this thing once wifi is supported... Course you cant beat DSlinux with its use of the stylus.. but this is still good news. :)

Yeah, hope this gets somewhere. Of course, it could turn out to be as much use as iPodLinux (ie. pretty much none).
Why hasn't someone ported RockBox yet, that's what I want to know.

This is cool and *hopefully* will get some coders on it. I mean, a lot could come out of this.

For some devices, apparently.

Sorry, I keep forgetting that RockBox supports more devices than just the iPod, I might as well stop spamming this thread with stuff not related to uClinux. Thanks SFB.

Being that I am too lazy to give this a shot myself, is it at all graphical? Or is it text based? God I hate text based OSes...

Check it out, http://www.rockbox.org/
Now, back on to the topic. I'm willing to bet you can only use this with fw 1.5 and below to install it. I can't wait to see how far this goes as far as development and functions. I hate waiting...

Wow, that means that the watchdog issue is solved?, this is awesome!
Now what we need is people to write device drivers for the psp and voila :D

Watchdog issue?
As for text based OS, not only is it a text based OS, but you can only interact with it via a serial adaptor plugged into the serial port near the headphone socket, using hyperterminal, it doesn't even use the screen yet :)

I'm only wondering lightly the possibilities this will have. Once a unique GUI is designed for this, with programs capable of making use of the PSP's Firmware to launch native PSP apps under uClinux, everyone will use it. Not to mention the number of applications that could be ported :D It would be beautiful.
