Sources suggest Barnes & Noble could leave Android behind at the end of the month.
Microsoft invested $300m into Barnes & Noble's Nook range (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/microsoft-buys-into-barnes-noble/017891) back in April, and Digital Trends (http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/barnes-and-noble-new-nook-in-september/) reckons a Windows 8-powered Nook Tablet will be unveiled at the end of September.
B&N's existing Nook Tablet uses the support of Google's OS, just like its hottest competitor the Kindle Fire, as well as other companies like Samsung et al.
The decision to use Windows ahead of Android would align B&N with Nokia, which famously avoided the little green robot's support in favour of Windows Phone last year.
Nook prices were slashed last month (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/nook-prices-are-slashed/018994) and the devices will debut in the UK in October (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/argos-blackwell-s-and-foyles-to-sell-nook-e-readers-in-the-uk/019187), suggesting the book retailer has something up its sleeve.
Either way, the firm certainly has a mountain ahead of it in light of the Kobo expansion (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/photos-kobo-unveils-two-new-e-readers-and-a-seven-inch-android-tablet/019270) and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/trick-or-treat-kindle-fire-hd-moves-to-the-uk-at-the-end-of-october/019286) and Paperwhite (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/kindle-paperwhite-faces-nook-and-kobo-head-on/019282) announcements.
