Sony seems to be having a bit of a problem. They have a portable system that is a success, but not by any means their main product. Then they have a new console that desperately needs games any way it can get them. Obviously they need to compete on the high end next gen game front, but they also need to compete against the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade. Without the backlog of games like Nintendo or the head start of Microsoft, they seem to be turning to a questionable source for their downloadable games; the PSP.

The obvious issue with PSP games going to PS3 is that it begins to negate the reasons for a consumer to own both. Sure, right now it's a Gripshift and a Tekken, but what happens if the trend just continues? Sure, this would strengthen the PlayStation Network, but at the cost of PSP exclusives. This is just not acceptable when the PSP still has a long way to go to establish itself.

If Sony does insist on continuing to take games from the PSP library to the PS3, than it needs to change how it does so. Microsoft announced Live Anywhere quite some time ago, but we're still waiting for the day when we can play Xbox Live Arcade games on the go. Part of the reason is that Microsoft doesn't yet have a portable gaming system, but Sony does. Why not have it so if I download Gripshift on the PS3 I can download it to my PSP as well free as charge. For games that require progress, it would be great if I was able to share saves between my PSP and PS3. Maybe this is part of Sony's eventual plans anyway, but until I can buy Tekken on my PSP and continue it on my PS3 or vice-versa, it seems like a missed opportunity.

It could just be that this is a temporary solution and as more developers jump on board the PlayStation Network, Sony will stop relying on PSP games as downloadable content. Even if this is the case though, it still seems like a dangerous road for Sony to travel. It could just be that I'm overreacting though. What do fellow PSP owners think of this development?

I believe (with the progress homebrew has made in a year) that all these systems will be good for more homebrew. Not new and exciting games. OMG another FPS!!!! or another platformer. Graphics can be forgotten pretty easily.

That the PSP is (at least officially) dying.

Maybe.

Or that Sony is trying to copy nintendo's idea of making past games downloadable for their next-gen consoles (we got the PSX emulator and this for example), just like the virtual console of the Wii, and the Xbox 360 compatibility with the other Xbox games.

I think the future of PSP will focus strongly on digital distribution. If a PSP2 is really going to have a 60GB built in HD, it is almost a guarantee that SONY will have an immense amount of content available for direct download.

This could also include commercial games.

I think we still have some time to go but in the next 10 years more and more multimedia content will be available via digital distribution.

This saves company's a LOT. But of course it has potential security risks regarding DRM.

The PSP isnt dying. Sony has just kicked it up a notch with its PSX emulator. I believe this PS3 is already dead. By the time they come out with enough good games. Someone will have a gadget that can boast much more graphics and gimmicks. Hell I saw a ps2 controller that says its six axis at walmart, what PS2 games use six axis?I want to see computer games hit the PSP now. Ultima Online would be sweet. (not enough buttons for that game. you need 5 keyboards to play that.)

You guys underestimate the deep library sony has access to for it's playtstation store. So far they've only tapped into the ps1 catalogue, but kaz himself said they were also interested in delivering ps2 games by download. They're gonna milk this thing for a while, and they still have a music label and movie studio to tap into when they feel like "pressing the button". I don't think sony is putting up a huge fight now because they're a little embarassed they can't produce consoles at a rate that they'd hoped, so they're bottlenecking things until they're comfortable. They've invested an immense amount of money into the development of the Cell processor and into the Blu Ray format, I think it makes them feel more comfortable if they get these things in order before they invest more in a proper push of the product. When the AAA third party titles start rolling in, I'm willing to bet we'll see things in a diffrent light.

1) What's the Percentage of People that 'leagaly' use PSX1 Emulation via a PS3™?

1a) How many of that Percentage just happen to live in the EU?

2) Why the Fook does S0NYŽ™ expect People to drop €599.99(EUR), on there crappy over-priced System just to allow access to those who'd wish to use 'leagal' PSX Emulation on there PSP's™?

As for S0NY'sŽ™ back Catalog of Games most if not all can already be found ~in the usual places~.
Given this Sites stance on Emulation and 'ROM's' I don't see much difference here if its a Playstation, or a Wonderswan or a Neo-Geo Pocket!

The fact remains if there is just One Card that remains to S0NYŽ™ it's the One that will allow you to Swap out PSX Discs (e.g. Luna), at the moment I do not think it's possible to swap Game Images ~In-Game~.
Not so much a Problem with FF-VII as IIRC it auto saves for you.
Sadly not all Games will do so.

Thus it'll be interesting to see how S0NYŽ™ manages to work around this Problem, and to see Dark Alex, work such a 'Fix' into his next version of Custom Firmware.

Then for S0NYŽ™ it'll be: GAME OVER!!
