Canadian web designer, David Tym, is preparing to enter the indie video game market with a bang. “The game I’m building is in the Vertical Scrolling Shooter genre, where you’re a modern fighter aircraft shooting up as waves of enemy swoop down on you, says David. It’s all fast-paced action, military hardware and gruff army generals.”

Differences between this new game and others in the genre are significant. Firstly, while popular games for the iPhone/iPad platform tend to be set in World War 2 or the future, David Tym’s game fights aliens in modern times with modern equipment the player can control. So instead of tapping on 2D pictures of the aircraft you want, you’re flying in fully-customizable, super-realistic 3D fighters, similar to cars we see in the Racing genre. “Essentially I’m pulling cool stuff from other genres and putting it altogether in a Vertical Scrolling Shooter game. I’m going full-out on features,” explains David.

Another dramatic difference is weapons selection. Unlike other games in the genre which offer very fundamental armament, this new game allows more guns and heavier guns to be added as the action heats up. The result is incredible crescendos in firepower, thrills and excitement.

Follow the battle

In addition to being the game’s creator, David Tym is recording its progress from beginning to launch to maintenance. “I’ve created a blog (http://www.visualodyssey.com/), Twitter (https://twitter.com/finalvanguard),YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/visualodysseygames) channel and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/VisualOdysseyGames). Yes, part of it is for buzz but a big part is for showing people what works and what doesn’t. I’ll be documenting my ups and downs, the business, the marketing and everything else. With 14 years in web design, my skill set transfers quite easily to video games but there is still lots to learn, so it’s going to be an interesting flight!”

This new vertical scrolling shooter game, David Tym’s first app, is set for release in the Apple store by Christmas with a 10-to-25 male target audience.
