Germany is leading the charge for standardizing rules regarding violent video games across the European Union. The country has perceived a massive rise in video game related violence as of late (which happens when you start looking for video game links to every crime that occurs) has recently proposed a law in their own country banning any game that depicts violence against humans. Since they are calling for standardized rules, one can easily assume they would like to see the same sort of law adapted across the whole of Europe.

"A certain degree of linkage between the growing violence among the younger generation and the growing diffusion of violent games exists," said Franco Frattini, the European Justice commissioner, at a meeting of the justice ministers in Dresden, Germany, on Tuesday.

Just what we need out of touch people telling gamers what games to play

wow, how un-european i must say.

i'd be surprised if even France let that through in the whole of the EU. I'd say Britain too, but most brits wont even except that we are part of the EU more fool them.

I recall the Contra series changing the men into robots for this sort of reason, also had a name change for obvious reasons to Probotecter, and in slightly more recent times there was the Turok that had robots instead of men to shoot. If they want this to spread to other lands then they are surely smoking something illegal but then they've always wanted to impose their will on the rest of europe havent they?

people say games can cause people to "lose touch" with reality and they sometimes get confused between the game world and the real world . in my opinion if you cant tell the difference you need help quickly. i enjoy games, i enjoy gta but i am not a criminal. killing in real life is tragic but on screen people aren't real and do not have familys and feelings. i think its down to parent to judge what they think is appropriate for their kids and by the time your old enough to buy 18 rated games you should be mature enough to know that it is just a game !!

Since when is this new? I thought any game depicting violence against humans was already banned and that games had to use robots, zombies or aliens in the place of human beings?

Well We need our freedom and liberty and these are getting erroded by regulations and laws such as this, we must be very careful of what laws and regulations we bring in as these can cause inisent good will people become involed in the law and before long we all dont know what is right or wrong, that is poilical correctness gone mad. Thats why we must defend our freedom and liberty using peaceful and loving ways such as the Democratic system of voting. A law such as this will make this matter much worse as where do you draw the line whats wrong and how do I know what I should not do? Are 2 white dots on a screen moving into each other volient? this can be interpred to be so could that be baned? what about voilent movies? I just think that is going to far....

From what I've gotten out of Call of Duty, it isn't just senseless killing. It has historic values.

Also, freedom and liberty? What freedom game regulation destroying? It is already regulated by age groups. It would just be more regulation by enforcing this act. Unless I totally misunderstood you. :p

I do personally feel, though, that game regulation like this needs to be taken upon the hands of the people who buy them and the people who sell them.

Don't say that, perhaps the politicians are watching and will steal your idea...

Well, I don't think anything will happen. It is just because there was a tragic happening with someone running amok in a school two months ago, and now every politician has an opinion as he wants to be in the news. Moreover we have the strictest game-controlling system in whole Europe, so I don't understand what they want to improve. And when I really want to have a game that is not allowed to be sold in Germany, I can still import the German version from Austria, or use some illegal sources to get the uncensored US-original...

I the end, I don't think they will be successful, expect supporting the illegal downloaders...

since the germans put a prisson sentance on doing vioelent acts against a human in a game and wants all contries in europe to do the same basicaly you could get put in prisson for brutaly killing some1 in a game.

I am from Germany and I must say it really sucks. Its not the will of the german players. The TV made Reportages about games only from their bad side, and frightened the older stupid people, which have now clue of Video Games. Its all because of our crappy Gouvernment which didnt recognize and hear to the Gamers in this land. Uwe Schünemann and Günter Beckstein are the main Persons which are responsible for this.

I must excuse my country. It was not the decision of the Gamers, we had no possibility, no voting etc. to tell our opinion. Its like a dictatorship to me.

As another Citizen of this Sorry Nation I'd have to agree.

Personally I'd wish Parents would break out there steady 'Pimp-Hand' more offten on there little darlin-ks when the steep outa-line.
Instead of coddling them and getting to Government involved.

But, hay welcome to the Socialists (Cradle to the Grave - Nanystate), Paradise! Right?!

Do you want to know the really tragic part to this tail?
If I were to go outside right now and Kill and Mame as many Idiots as I could get my Hands (or Sights), on.
The Maximum given Sentence for most Violent Crimes here in Germany is only about Fifteen Years, probably less with good behavior.

Only the truly sickest of Crimes like that Case with those Cannibals. ~I think they did receive a Life Sentence though.~
Although I forsee little problems with this applying to Half-Life, or other Ego-Shooter Gamers.

Hell Herr, Thompson would be proud of us!!

You can say that again! I mean look at how our Government stole our Currency and powned us with the Teruo!
Where was the Referendum on that!???
There's no way I would have given up my D-Marks for that Crap, had I had a say in the matter...
