Borderlands 3 is not currently in development at Gearbox, according to studio boss Randy Pitchford.

It's fun to talk and think, but actual effort is focused on Borderlands 2 DLC, Aliens, etc."Pitchford's comments were made in response to those of Anthony Burch, lead writer on theBorderlands (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/playstation-3/fps/11260/borderlands/) franchise, who recently said that Gearbox has started thinking about a third entry in the series.
"Clean and Simple truth: The only Borderlands related game development work going on right now is for Borderlands 2," Pitchford reiterated.
"Anthony was speaking to his thoughts. We're all thinking about it and it's exciting to think. But there's no project - no actual effort."
Gearbox has announced plans to release four campaign add-on packs as Borderlands 2 DLC (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/365584/borderlands-2-dlc-details-new-adventures-allies-enemies-and-environments/). ABorderlands 2 Season Pass (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/365438/borderlands-2-dlc-season-pass-to-cost-30/) enabling players to pre-purchase all of them at a discount is available.
