A Microsoft branded smartphone could well be in the pipeline, after a report in the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204712904578093680117917590.html?_ nocache=1351834112061&user=welcome&mg=id-wsj) suggested that the company is currently testing a new handset design with component suppliers in Asia.
While Microsoft has thus far declined to comment on the rumours, a source cited in the report stated that the smartphone has a screen size of four inches, which is in the same range as top smartphones from Apple, Samsung, HTC and Motorola.
However, according to the report, officials at component suppliers did indicate that the Microsoft smartphone may not go into mass production.
Should Microsoft introduce a smartphone for commercial production, the company would move closer to the Apple business model, designing both the software and hardware for each of its marquee devices.
