Scott Moffitt admits tablet gaming is growing, but Nintendo is still doing well
In a talk at the BMO 2012 Digital Media Conference (attended by Polygon (http://www.polygon.com/2012/11/8/3617838/the-rise-of-tablet-gaming-is-undeniable-says-nintendo)), Nintendo executive vice president of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt called the rise of tablet/smartphone gaming “undeniable”.
"It's undeniable the growth of tablets and their ability to play games,” said Moffitt.
Moffitt called tablets and smartphones Nintendo's “allies”, as they help users easily access Nintendo websites and product information. Despite the admission, Moffitt explained that the Wii U - with its tablet-style GamePad - is still looking like a solid contender according to Nintendo's internal data.
"At the same time when we look at our data," he said. "The DS didn't have competition from tablets and smartphones, and yet we are outpacing the rate of sale for the DS. These are seemingly conflicting data points. Obviously we see a rise in new competitive products, but we are seeing better results in a tougher environment."
GamesIndustry International spoke with Scott Moffitt on the phone this week as well, so please stay tuned for that interview.
