The firm's head of mobile sales and marketing has acknowledged that its Xperia smartphone fails to compete with both Apple and Samsung.
In an interview with the German edition of the Financial Times (http://www.ftd.de/it-medien/it-telekommunikation/:smartphonemarkt-sony-setzt-zur-aufholjagd-bei-smartphones-an/70118293.html), Dennis Van Schie admitted that Sony's Xperia smartphone lacks behind both the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III.
However, Van Schie took the opportunity to announce that Sony would be unveiling a new smartphone at next year's annual CES event held in Las Vegas.
"We will create in the near future a flagship Sony model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III," said the head of Sony Mobile's sales and marketing.
Van Schie also revealed that a new range of Sony tablets will be on show at the event too but they will be limited in number as "it has become very difficult to earn money with tablets."
That would certainly seem to be the case with the dominance of Apple within the market, as well as fierce competition from Microsoft's newly released Surface tablet.
