Anyone got suggestions for (preferably free) software for converting video clips/films/DVDs etc on to the PSP?

You could try PSPvideo9 or Any Video Converter.

i looked for one, but the only good ones i found were sharewares, can you link me to the one you have?

Cheers for the help guys - I used PSPvideo9 and converted a .avi file to mp4 but it gained in size by about 150Mb?? Anyway I don't care, the conversion went fine and the transfer to my psp worked and the film is excellent, cheers once again.
