The Wii U's NFC (Near Field Communication) functionality was first seen working in a leaked trailer for Rayman Legends, but the game itself may release next year without any NFC functionality.

"We had prototypes of this and we believe that having real objects manipulating gameplay could be quite innovative. But again, this was a prototype and we won't discuss it until it's ready to demonstrate its full potential," he said, stopping short of confirming the feature for the early 2013 sequel.
The leaked video in question (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/345503/wii-u-toy-functionality-leaked-in-rayman-legends-trailer/) showed toys being placed onto the Wii U controller in the style of Activision's Skylanders, which then transport new characters into the game.
In January Nintendo announced new NFC technology (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333655/nintendo-details-new-wii-u-controller-functionality/) for the Wii U controller, but later confirmed (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/368447/nfc-technology-not-supported-in-wii-u-launch-titles/) that none of the system's launch games would make use of the feature.
