MapThis! FAQ

Introduction:
I made this FAQ because many questions are being asked over and over again. This floods the threads and makes it hard to find the answer.
Please read this FAQ thoroughly before asking any questions.
All Questions and answers in this FAQ were taken from Deniska`s Forums sometimes other Forums also helped in answering questions these are then mentioned in the according sections.
All I did was to read all threads and to collect the information .

What is MapThis!?
MapThis is a freeware map viewer for PSP. It is based on free map imagery and data from Google,Yahoo, MSN, etc.

Where can I find the latest Version of MapThis?
There are currently two differnet versions of MapThis. One supports serial GPS devices and the other one supports the Sony GPS-290.
Check the Links section for downloads.

Which Firmware do I need?
1.5
2.71 SE by Dark_Alex (This is not an original SONY firmware!!!)
3.02 OE by Dark_Alex (This is not an original SONY firmware!!!)
3.03 OE by Dark_Alex (This is not an original SONY firmware!!!)
3.10 OE by Dark_Alex (This is not an original SONY firmware!!!)

ANY OFFICIAL SONY FIRMWARE HIGHER THAN 1.5 DOES NOT SUPPORT HOMEBREW - SO MAPTHIS! WILL NOT WORK ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which GPS devices are supported and how do I connect them to the PSP?
Basically any GPS device should work as long as it supports serial com port and NMEA protocol.. you only need to figure out the correct pinouts. Please do not ask about the colurs of the wires! The colours mentioned here and in the forum can change so don’t take them for granted! Going by colours is very risky. For colours of standard psp remote cable see FAQ “The PSP RS232 port”

HOLUX GPSlim240:
baud rate needs to be changed in the config.txt to 4800
HOLUX GPSlim236:
HOLUX GR-231:
Use the default Readtime of 1.
No need of resistor – some say it only works without this but try with a 1k resistor first to be on the safe side.
HOLUX GR-230:

wiring for all four Holux devices

For the Holux devicesy you can also purchase a pre made serial cable here:
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=45279&page=27

GlobalSat BR-305
Pharos GPS-360
(requires customizing the config file, reported by A Fn NOOB)
baud rate needs to be changed in the config.txt to 4800
You need to put fakefeed=0 in ms0:/psp/game/mapviewer/system/config.txt
Works with setting read time at 2 try different settings for better results

Garmin GPSmap 60C (reported by Xern)
baud rate needs to be changed in the config.txt to 4800

Sony PSP GPS290:
You need latest version of MapThis! Check out the links section

How do I Install MapThis!?
MapThis_0460:
Download deniska's latest version unzip it and just copy everything from the 1.5 folder to your psp ms0:/PSP/GAME folder
of course the name of the "Game folder" depends on which firmware you are running and what you have set as Gamefolder in the recovery menu. I am runnining dark_alex's 3.03_OEB and have set this to 1.50 Kernel so my gamefolder is ms0:/PSP/GAME

MapThis_0461S_beta
Download deniska's latest version unzip it and just copy the PSP folder to your psp ms0

How do I exit from MapThis! ?
Just hit select twice: first hit brings you to the screen where you can select your maps- second hit exits from MapThis!

I have a GPS device hooked up correctly - It works with the green proggie
But in MapThis! with GPS mode on it says: Your Location is out of range...
check 4 things:
1) FAKEFEED=0 (in config.txt)
2) MapThis version (0.4)
3) your map actually covers the location you are at
4) gps locked on satelites (gps light flashing on the unit..)

Downgraded a TA-082 PSP and and your PSP290 device doesn't work?
Try this , it has helped others in the same situation.

043.bin
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=16204&d=1172371117

Can I connect my GPS device to the USB port?
Only the Sony GPS290 works on the usb port at the moment.
You will need usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx for it to work.
Check the LINKS section for downloads.
And yet another hint (the green proggie comes bundle with 2.71 prx version which may just work for you if just copied)
INSTALLATION OF GREEN PROGGIE
This program was coded and tested for custom 3.03 OE-B firmware.
1) Place camprx folder in the root of your memory stick
2) Place GPS_290_TEST folder in to /PSP/GAME303/ or whatever folder is setup to be ran under
3.03 kernel.
3) Connect your gps receiver and run the program...

These combinations have been used successfully:
2.71 usbacc.prx and 3.03 usbgps.prx
2.71 usbacc.prx and 2.71 usbgps.prx (working on 3.03 OE-C)
3.03 usbacc.prx and 3.03 usbgps.prx (working Euro PSP no firmware mentioned)

A little bit on trials and errors.

Running MapThis! 0.461S(beta) in 3.03OE-C, WITHOUT GPS MODULE (MAP MODE):

Trial 1:
- Running in 3.03 Kernel
- Using usbacc.prx from 2.71FW, PSAR Dumped using PRX Decrypt 27X
- Using usbgps.prx from 3.03FW, PSAR Dumped using C+D PSAR Dumper, WITH sigcheck

Result 1: Loading USB GPS module... error

Trial 2:
- Running in 1.50 Kernel
- Using usbacc.prx from 2.71FW, PSAR Dumped using PRX Decrypt 27X
- Using usbgps.prx from 3.03FW, PSAR Dumped using C+D PSAR Dumper, WITH sigcheck

Result 2: Loading USB GPS module... error

Trial 3:
- Running in 1.50 Kernel
- Using usbacc.prx from 2.71FW, PSAR Dumped using PRX Decrypt 27X
- Using usbgps.prx from 3.03FW, PSAR Dumped using C+D PSAR Dumper, WITHOUT sigcheck

Result 3: MapThis! loads OK, no error

Trial 4:
- Running in 3.03 Kernel
- Using usbacc.prx from 2.71FW, PSAR Dumped using PRX Decrypt 27X
- Using usbgps.prx from 3.03FW, PSAR Dumped using C+D PSAR Dumper, WITHOUT sigcheck

Result 4: MapThis! loads OK, no error

CONCLUSION: This may be the cause of 3.03 usbgps.prx not working for some people. As for MapThis! being able to run in 1.50 Kernel, dunno, everyone said that it doesn't, but mine does. By the way, Deniska did mentioned to use 3.03 prx, C+D psar-dumped WITHOUT sigcheck (click CIRCLE)

Getting PRX files: Thx to zsc
What you'll need -
1. PBP Unpacker - http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/97
2. SONY Official Firmwares - http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/36
3. PSAR Dumpers - http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/38

What you need to do -
1. Download and install PBP Unpacker.
2. Download Sony firmwares (2.71, 3.03, 3.10)
3. Open the firmwares in PBP Unpacker, extract just the DATA.PSAR (right-click on it, select extract)
4. Download PSAR Dumpers, make sure you're using the correct version with respect to the firmware version
5. Put the PSAR Dumper (do this one version at a time) on your MemoryStick Pro Duo (MSPD)
6. Put DATA.PSAR in ms0:\ (root folder for the MSPD)
7. Run PSAR Dumper (same way as running MapThis)
8. When prompted, press the "O" button (dump WITHOUT sigcheck), THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
9. Once finished, exit program and connect to PC, move the flash0 or f0 folder from MSPD to PC.
10. Find usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx in flash0\kd\ folder (or f0\kd\ folder), copy them to a new folder, name the folder with firmware version number.
11. Repeat step 3 through 10 with other firmware if needed.
PRX files go into your mapViewer folder NOT seplugins or flash0.

Does MapThis! support the USB port?
No. Not at the time being. Only if you use the SONY GPS

Can the PSP power the GPS device?
No, the PSP will not give enough power to power a GPS unit from the serial port. The Holux GPSlim236 used in this setup here has its own battery.
If you use devices without internal batteries you will need to provide external power somehow.

Does MapThis! support of different languages?
No MapThis only supports English but In7ane’s mapping tool does

My PSP screen always turns off after 5 minutes.
Go to SETTINGS - POWER SAVE SETTINGS - BACKLIGHT AUTO OFF.
Change setting from 5 Minutes to Off.
Also you might want to change Auto Sleep to Off since the default value is 10 Minutes.

GMDL Tips&Tricks

Creating Maps with GMDL Thx to zsc
. Download and extract gmdl0.4.8b, all the files needed for GMDL to run are in '\gmdl0.4.8b\GMDL\bin\Debug' folder.
2. Execute 'Global Map Download Tool.exe'.
3. Using the Google map view, navigate to the area desire.
4. Click 'Advanced' button in the lower left corner.
5. In the box that shows up, click 'Get Numbers'.
6. Select the type of map from the list on the left.
7. In the Advanced box, select 'Preview', verify that the area shown in the center box is the one you want, if not, click 'Browse' tab, adjust the map (zoom in, zoom out, move it around), click 'Get Numbers' and 'Preview'.
8. Set the minimum zoom level, for MapThis! to work properly, zoom level must be greater or equal than '-2'.
9. If you want 'geodata.dat' to be added to the map, check the box 'Add GeoData.DAT (US only)', for US maps ONLY.
10. Click 'Set Dir' up top and choose the destination where map will be saved, must begin with '_' (underscore character), ie. '_Los Angeles'.
11. In the Advanced box, click 'Pull Files'.
12. A window will pop up, select zoom levels that you want in the upper left corner, only the checked zoom level will be downloaded.
13. In the 8x8 grid, uncheck any area that you dont want to download a detailed map for.
14. Click the bar on the top.
15. Sit back until map is created, place it in 'mapViewer\maps\' on your PSP.

Creating point to point routes with GMDL
1.Start gmdl
2. Open directions
3. Activate local.live, google or yahoo
4. Choose appropriate site i.e de.maps.google.de for Germany
(map24 is disabled at the moment)
5. Enter Starting point:
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 An Deroy 22
6. Enter Ending point
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 reduitstrasse1
7. Click on „Route Berechnen“ (calculate route)
you may skip this step but then you won`t see the calculated route in gmdl
8. Once route has been calculated click Button „Get Values“
9. Activate the „create intermittant“ function and leave the default value, otherwise you will only have the most important waypoints in your map and it won’t look like an outlined route from start to end.
9. Click Button List
10. enter a name for the route
makesure it starts with _ i.e. _myfirstroute
11. click Button „Save POI“
12. copy generated file to the mapfolder you are using
You will find the generated file in the same folder as the „Google Maps Download.exe“

Making smaller maps Thx to monkeyboy1982
A couple of tips to decrease the size of your maps:
1.Create map using "no GPSFS" option.
2.Do a search within the resulting .PNG files for any files less than 300bytes in size.
3.Delete all of these files. They are 99% useless as they tend to be tiles containing only one colour, or useless information.
4.Batch process all other .PNG's using Photoshop or other image batch processor, making sure you compress the files as much as possible.
5.Finally recompress all the files using ->GPSFS in GMDL software.

@haizad
try downloading again i just did and got the PSP290TEST.rar file with no problems.
Its size should be 53KB. After unpacking it you should have these files/dirs in it:
PSP290TEST/camprx/usbacc.prx
PSP290TEST/camprx/usbgps.prx
PSP290TEST/src/sceUsbGps.S
PSP290TEST/src/pspusbgps.h
PSP290TEST/src/main.c
PSP290TEST/src/Makefile

Hmm..that's funny...I've tried downloading a few times but I always get the "unexpected end of archive" error when I open it with winrar and the "the file is corrupt" when I try to extract it...any ideas anyone? TIA.. :)
ps:I only get 2 folders in the winrar file..the camprx and the psp/game303 one...the src and the readme folder seems to be missing..

@haizad
just try downloading again and again ;-)
I've got the same problem sometimes.
But in the end one of the downloads eventually works; oh yes and sometimes it helps to delete the corrupted file before trying to download it again.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think the geodata is currently only for the states...maybe we should all rally together and get our governments to make geodata for our respective countries...whaddaya think? ;)

But how does it work then? Can i use the GPS in Sweden without the geodata?
What is the geodata for actually?

rhygin
February 25th, 2007, 11:15
@JoQ
with geodata I think you can search for locations in the psp itself if you have created a geodata file for the map you are using.
But as I live in Germany and there is no geodat for Europe yet I haven't really tested this function.
But if you want to create a route for your map you can use in7ane's gmdl to do it.
Here is how to :
1.Start gmdl
2. Open directions
3. Activate map24 ,local.live or google
4. Choose apropriate site i.e de. maps.google.de for Germany
(map24 did not work for me)
5. Enter Starting point:
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 An Deroy 21
6. Enter Ending point
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 reduitstrasse1

Okey thanks alot... im first of all trying to put in maps in the "maps" folder. But i don't know how i can get whole Sweden downloaded to the maps-folder?
If u got time to explain this it would be great!?

And the links for latest gmdl doesnt work :/

rhygin
February 25th, 2007, 11:56
@JoQ
The links don't work because it looks as if in7anes website is down at the moment.
Getting all of Sweden into MapThis is almost impossible I think you need about 500GB diskspace to download Sweden with all zoom levels.
and even then some of the northern part of Sweden would still be missing.

JoQ
February 25th, 2007, 12:00
Ah... thought it would work. But whats the point if you need to put in new maps for every place you need to go. How much can i get? Only my city? Couse i thought you could have a map for all Europe if u need to navigate down i Europe...

Hi,

I am using firmware 3.10 OE-A and using the prxs from the download link above and I cannot get Mapthis! to load successfully.

I get to the select map screen but I can't scroll onto any maps in the selection and if I press either X or O I get a grey box with some weird characters in it.

Any suggestions where I am going wrong?

TIA

hi,

there are many links, it depends which link you have selected. wether yo have downloaded the full mapthis software or updated one. also is it serial connection version or psp 290 . i doubt you only have the updated version and not the core which has EBOOT.PBP file. or maybe you have EBOOT.PBP but different prx's. if you can tell which links you have used to download and what files and folders you have, it may give some idea.

2.71 & 3.03 usbgps (in links section)

I have now DLed the latest MapThis 498 and I get Map this to load but it stops when trying to load the Map it just keeps saying please wait even though my map is tiny just 1x on GMDL.

make sure that the name of the map starts with _ like _London and place it in the maps folder. maybe the map is incomplete. which area map hav you downloaded? try with other maps.

where did u get the map from?

Hi I have got it working now. With the afore mentioned prx'. I DLed the latest 498 build and it started to work, must have been something wrong with my first install.

The map is fine it is from GMDL.

The only 'problem' I have now is the slow time it takes to fix a few few sats. I will try other firmwares though as I know it's trial and error.

thanks for the reply.

hi,
i have compiled all the files in a single folder. it comes with all latest files. download this and simply extract in the :/PSP/GAME303 folder (i assume that you have ver 3.03 OE C) and copy all your maps in the "maps" folder.

http://rapidshare.com/files/28483215/mapViewer.rar

and it is normal to get the satallite fix in 5 to 7 minutes. nothing can be done about this.

I have the psp-290 and I have done everything suggested in the MapThis FAQ, but still can not get the GPS unit to work. I ran the green proggie and it gives me an error on starting usb BUS driver.

I am running 3.03 OE-C and am using MAPThis_0498 and 2.71 usbacc.prx and 3.03 usbgps.prx.

Please give me some suggestions, thanks!

hi,
are you using any plugins. like seplugins which enables you to play games from your computer hard disk. if yes, then disable these plugins and try. download the latest compiled map this software from above link and place it in the :\PSP\GAME303 folder. also make sure in recovery mode, set kernal to 3.03
hope that helps

Thanks for the help Raj. I got the green proggie to work. Although, the Mapthis_0498 just says loading usb accessory module. The screen goes blank after a little bit and the PSP powers down.
Also, Is there a more current version than 0498?

Thanks

hi, the map will NOT load automatically. you will have to select it manually. once you are out of the boundries of your map. it will show "data not available" and you will get an error message " out of range" someting like that.

hi,
i have never tried green proggie. if you are using mapthis software that is available on this page, then connect your gps device and on psp press "start" and then select "GPS Info" from the menu on screen. that will show ou the GPS status.

you will not get gps signal if you are at home or under covered area. u should use it in open sky where there is not much obstruction.

and also it is normal for sony gps to take 5 to 7 minutes to get the gps satallite connection to be able to work.

hope that helps.

First I'd like to thank deniska, you made an awesome work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a question:
In menu / GPS INFO there's a field "LOC" that varies from 0 to 2 with the right button
what is that for?

raj_ace_in
May 4th, 2007, 23:57
hi, i had a look in my psp and the none of the button did anything to th field "LOC", only up and down button was changing the speed of the cpu. maybe it is because i checked without gps. i will try it with gps and see what happens.

by the way to all those who have downloaded the mapthis programe and want to see how it works, i have uploaded the global map. it will not show you details like road etc. but will show you the world map which is good to see how mapthis works. the zoom level is not great but thats what we can get in 3mb file.

extract and place this file in "maps" folder in your mapthis programme in the memory stick.

Hello!
My dear foreign friends!
I am a Chinese Mapthis user. Thanks to deniska provide such great app to us!!
At the first time I knew PSP can run GPS I bought a PSP-290. And then I downgrade my 2.71(TA-082)PSP to 1.5 FW, then upgrade it to 3.40 OEA.
I run a modified Mapthis290_cn well now!
But I have one problem with use the latest Mapthis0499_beta, I replaced the old folder "system" and the old "eboot.pbp" with the Mapthis0499_beta ones. After start the app, when I open a map(which works well with "mapthis290_cn") it displays not correctly. After the PSP fixed the satellites it says "Location out of range!! The map does not cover the following coord: xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx"
I change the "Config.txt" file according to my area, such as the time zone=+8 etc.
Also the time displayed is not my location's time.

So what should I do with the latest mapthis0499_beta? What should I to change to let it works well in China?

Waiting for your kind answer!!! Thanks in advance!!

I would recomend - generating a new map with gmdl tool

Has anyone else noticed that under clocking the CPU seems to help a lot in getting Map This! to function correctly. I'm currently on a 3.03 OE psp and couldn't get a fix but could get satellites in view, but the second I clocked it to 222Mhz it started to work properly, however it still seems a little temperamental where it will sometimes work and somethimes not work at all, any ideas?

hi,
i have used your file in in7ane map download software, and deleted all the POI which were not in english. then created a POI file and used in my map. it worked great. but the only problem is that all these POI's are for Bangkok only. and there are so many POI's in that, the map looks cluttered and as there is too much of information in too little space.

Hi,
I'm about to ask some very noob questions about PSP and mapthis because I am totally new to PSP (in fact, I ordered a psp 1.5 fw but hasn't got it yet) so please don't get pissed ><

Ok here I go:

-when I get my hands on the psp 1.5, what will be the first thing I best do? (play around with it to see if its working properly? upgrade to custom firmware immediately? etc..)
-If I am to upgrade the firmware, which one should I go for that is most compatible with mapthis? (and games too would be nice)
-Let say I want to use 3.03 OE-C, should I upgrade to 3.03 A then B then C or just do straight from 1.5 to 3.03 OE-C?
-(This one is abit off topic) If I upgrade straight to 3.03 OE-C, will I still be able to use PSx emulator on psp?

I'm buying the PSP mainly to utilize the GPS feature but being able to play games too will be even better.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advices.

A bit of a late reply, sorry - glad you figured it out guys.

A note on big POI files, I recall deniska saying that only the closest 400 locations will be shown (and upto 10000 per file), so when you scroll to a new area toggle to hide and show POIs again to show the ones for that area.

Non english characters - I can include an option to strip them out, or if someone wants to post a mapping table substitute them for english letters.

The latest version should be able to handle "foreign" languages, provided that someone creates a "resourse bundle" for the language...
I provided a sample bundle to allow Russian localization..

Did you put the proper .prx files in the Map This! folder?

Are you using the proper EBOOT file (the one for the PSP-290?

You have to double check all of the directions and try to narrow down what the problem might be. I'll be glad to try and help you set it up if you can provide the details.

Tell us exactly what FW, Mother board, Map This version, EBOOT version... basically your entire set up and where everything is in your memory card. It doesn't work, I need help is too vague.

But one problem is the map from mapabc is so bad! There is a huge tolerance when use mapabc's map.
So I still use mapthis290_cn work on 51ditu's map.
Thanks all the same!!

are you using any "seplugins" to play games from computer hard drive? if you are using any plugins to use the usb, make sure you disable them in recovery menu before using mapthis software. also it may not work is kernal in recovery menu is set to 1.5, if it is , change it to 3.03 or 3.40 depending upon whatever OE u r using.

If your using the PSP-290 you have to do so in 3.xx FW under 3.xx kernel. Which means that you can leave your kernel set to 1.5 as long as you place MapThis in the GAME3XX folder. If you are using a holux or some other GPS reciever then you can use FW 1.5. I am not familiar with the holux version.

Start by giving all details (FW, GPS receiver type and everything else MapThis related) so that someone who is familiar with your set up can help you....good luck.

The PSP-290 does not work on FW 1.5. You have to upgrade to Dark Alex's custome FW in order to use the 290. I believe it has to be FW 3.xx OE-x (3.03 or higher but I may be wrong). Make sure you do some research to find out exactly what you have to do in order to upgrade properly. I have a TA-079 (original) motherboard so I can't help you with that part. There are plenty of tutorials and helpful people around to assist you. Good luck.

Firstly Thanks for your fast reply and statements.I examined this matter on other places and I saw that It works on FW 3.03 OE-X but I cannot upgrade directly to it from my FW 1.50.Besides I didn't still find FW 3.03 OE-X.So I'm still waiting for more detailed respond above #77 numbered message.Regards

Someone PLEASE STICKY THIS dl for 3.40 OEA users!!

http://rapidshare.com/files/32177069/3.40oe_and_psp-290.rar.html
(originally posted by yaro666)

PSP 1.0 JP -> 1.5 JP -> 2.0 JP -> 1.5 JP -> 2.x & 3.x OEx series -> PSP 3.40 OEA w/Sony PSP receiver.

The link to the package works fine on my PSP at 3.40 OEA at any Mhz, so 333Mhz is fine.

---

Just dump it into the directory as noted in the readme, start it up with the GPS unit plugged in and in about <5 minutes or less, it's up and locked! Of course performance-wise, that's outside the home with nothing taller than 1-story homes all around.

Even moving under the porch = loss of lock, ie. it'll see a two to three satellites, but the lat/lon is lost and there's not a single 1 beside the satellite listing to indicate a lock.

In full open, it usually sees 6+ satellites in view, so that's good.

Doesn't work so good in a car. Sometimes, it'll lock and hold it. Sometimes, it simply won't pickup enough satellites to achieve a lock. Even heading in 180 degree opposite down the street will result in lock one way, no lock the other.

So, that said, if you're going to spend the $$ on any GPS receiver:
1) Any cell phone today from Verizon etc with their Navi plan will probably give you better navi in a car and inside a building due to better cell tower coverage + GPS.
2) Any handheld GPS with the latest receiver chips will probably do better as well, with faster locks.
3) Any other GPS unit for the PSP will probably give you a better lock, faster.

---

I've tested the PSP receiver in LA and Tokyo, and it's a) slow at achieving lock ie, longer than a few minutes outdoors b) loses lock easily under coverage c) takes time to re-lock.

---

That said, GPS unit works fine with both MapPlus (Japan only map UMD) and MapThis (USA maps from Google downloaded using GMDL 0.4.16b).

Resolution is pretty good for the GMDL map -- I'm between streets and it's got me spot on on the Google map =)

---

Wish the default menu button after pressing START was the GPS satellite listing instead of PSP speed -- since my PSP locks and runs fine at 111-333Mhz with this software and PSP receiver.

Hello wise ones !

I am using firmware 3.03 OE-C and using the prxs extracted from my own firmware and I cannot get Mapthis! to work successfully.

I get to the select map screen but I can't scroll onto any maps in the selection and if I press either X or O I get a grey box with some weird characters in it (not letters or numbers, more like symbols).

I have the program in GAME303 and the psp is in 1.50 Kernal, I have also tried putting the program in GAME in 1.50 and 3.03 kernal, still no luck.

I am using the PSP-290, the EBOOT for teh PSP-290 is also in the MAPTHIS folder, while leaving the MAPTHIS% folder the same !?

(sorry for the double post as I think I posted in the PSPnavi thread too as thought that was the correct forum)

Any suggestions where I am going wrong, would appreciate someones help as I have just bought the GPS unit !

NEVERMIND!

I upgraded to 3.40 OE-A and it works like a charm!

PLEASE HELP

I think I may have a bad GPS unit.

3.10 OE-A on a launch day PSP.

Using the "3.40oe_and_psp-290.rar" (and the included prx's) found in this thread for the 3.40oe. Mapthis is installed in the game310 folder and will launch fine. I turn on GPS and check in the GPS Info. The GPS info reports the GPS STATE: OFF. Is the GPS supposed to light up, or give any kind of indication it is functioning? When I remove the GPS and plug a USB cable connected to my computer the status changes to activativing. I have a second PSP that I will upgrade to 3.40 oe tonight and test with that PSP, any suggestions?

Try presing square to turn on the gps then wait a few seconds and press start. Then go to the gps info, then walk outside and stand still for about 5 minutes. I guarrantee you will get a solid fix on some sats and you will be a happy guy.

Trust me I though my gps was broken as well. I got mine today and turned it on and was waiting for a fix for a good 4 hours. Then I realized that maybe, just maybe, I would get lucky is I go outside. as soon as I got outside i got 2 or 3 sats found. Then after probably 3 minutes I got a good fix. Basically I just did that like 10 minutes ago. :D

Morale of the story:

If something is wrong, go outside.

The firmware was my initial problem. Now that it is "working" I find the signal is next to useless in my city (Milwaukee, WI). I get about 5-6 SAT's in view, with only 3 fixed after about 10 minutes. I never get better then a 36 SNR (assuming SNR is signal to noise ratio and the higher the number the better) on the best fix. I'm also constantly loosing my fix.

Sergio,
Montreal

You have to put POI file to the map folder of the map of your area. :)
So you've made a POi or root _My Montreal
put it into your folder of the city map _Montreal (which you already created with GMDL).
Best regards.

By the way. I was traveling to Montreal with my PSP and PSP-290 and at the centre ville it was difficult for GPS device to catch sats. It doesn't like city "trenches" - roads between high buildings . What about your device?

MapThis! FAQ

I got it running on my Custom 3.52 M33-2 PSP too and i even made some guides for how to do this ;)
So you can add that Fw too to the list now
Just check my signature for links :)

Hello,
I'm brand new to this whole homebrew deal and was seeking some guidance from you guys. I know nothing about homebrew. I've read through some of the FAQ and all 11 pages of this thread but I don't think it has answered my question yet.

I got one of the newer PSPs and downgraded from 3.50 to 1.50 and then 3.03OEC. For the GPS device I'm using the Sony 290. I've been playing with Mapthis and trying various things suggested in the forums and so far Raj's complied one is the only one working so far or at least got me the furthest. So right now the mapViewer program is in the X:/PSP/GAME303 folder. I run the program and it gets to the the "Select map" screen and right now the list is blank. When I hit the X button it shows up with a screen saying "Please wait while map is loading" and you see the memory card doing something. How long is this supposed to take? Is this the screen that is supposed to be locking to the GPS, the one some are saying takes 5-7 minutes? This is where I believe I'm stuck cause while the memory card is doing stuff, I'm not sure it is making any progress as it is just taking forever. Still going no where as I'm looking at it right now.

Also, I read about you guys talking about different kernel modes and switching(?) between them? how is that done? is that just dependent on which folder you put your program in?

Thanks for the help, I just downgraded and such yesterday for the GPS functionality and I'm slowly learning new stuff bit by bit.

Edit: I think i know what's going on... I gotta get my own maps. Now I just gotta figure out why it's finding satelites but not connecting to them. I got 6 empty red bars...

Edit 8/17/2007. Slowly figuring it out. I also tried running the USB fix deal but it said that this was already run on my system and doesn't need to be fixed.

Most "fixes" I've gotten so far is 5 satellites but that's with the Green Proggie. 3 "fixes" is the most I got on Map This but unable to get it locked and tracking. It seems like it takes roughly a minute or two to find each additional satellites. Remaking my map so I can drive around with Map This! to see if it will track.

EDIT 8/20/07

Got it workin!

HI,

I got my GPS 290 locally here in Beijing and installed 0497 on my PSP. Made a map of Beijing which I had to do from the non google, yahoo source as this is the only way. Mapthis loads up ok, map loads up fine but for the life of me I cannot get a fix, open space obviously as satellites need line of sight and do not work indoors. Is there any tweak i can do ? The maps work fine. I tried 0499 but get usb accessory error so reverted to 0497.

New to the psp so grateful for any advice.

Thanks in advance

I have really enjoyed reading this post and have really learned alot from it. The Map This! program is awsome and I had no problems running it under M33-3. I upgraded to M33-4 and now Map This! v.05 psp-290 will no longer run in the Game352 folder. It will start, but then locks up and restarts the psp on the map select screen. I have tried to delete it and start from scratch, but it still locks up. I can run it in the Game150 folder, but of course the usbacc.prx and the usbgps.prx files will not load from this folder and it locks up and restarts the psp just like in the Game352 folder. I can leave those two files out and the program runs fine, but of course without those, you will not get the GPS to work. You can only view maps. Has anyone else had this problem with M33-4? I have tried everything I can think of other than downgrading back to M33-3 (where everything worked great). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just got my third PSP because the other two i own has an older motherboard and the new one has a Ta-082 Mobo and i Bricked it and Unbricked it and upgraded it to 3.52 M33-4 and i ran Mapthis 0.499 wich worked fine and then i tried 0.5 and it to was running smoothly :)

I heard some people with TA Mobos had some problem with Registrykeys that has to be cleaned.

I had no problem with my Unbricked PSP anyways.
I was running the PSP-290 and my own extracted .prx files from the guide i made earlier in my sign :)

Hey Deniska Im running firmware 3.40 oe-a. I am considering buying the psp-290. I'm just really confused by ur readme file and the different tutorials out there. Im wondering if the psp290 will work with mapthis .5 and if you could guide me with proper installation. I saw some of ur videos the product is really cool and I really want it to work. I saw that you might possibly live in the brooklyn NY area. If i could just give you my psp you could set it up haha. Anyway please help I've been browsing the forums and I am confused.

You just unpack the rar file that should be 39Mb or so and copy the MapThis for PSP290 to your memorycards PSP/GAME352 folder :)

Take a peek at my guides and adapt the info for the 0.5 version ;)

You must have a Custom FW PSP to be able to run MapThis. :D

Thank you for the reply. I do not have the Ta-082 board. It is an older psp. I actually did use your guide to extract the prx files from Flash(0) when I was running under M33-3. I rechecked the files under M33-4 and they appear to be the same files (file date and size are the same) as I would expect them to be since M33-4 is just an update patch and not a new revision of the firmware itself. I rechecked the settings in the recovery console and I am still running at the 1.50 kernel. I did not notice that the update changed any of my default settings (although I might have missed something which I do not understand) All my emus and isos work fine, however I did notice that the game list under Mame is no longer in fullscreen whereas it was under M33-3. It just seems strange to me. :(

Try to move the MapThis 0.5 program to PSP/GAME352 folder and run it from there.
There should be no problems, ive tried my old 0.499 and a newly installed 0.5 and it works on all my PSPs.

hey all,

been reading around and cant find a solution 2 my problem yet so decided to post.

Got a PSP and according to Settings --> System Settings --> System Information, the system software is 3.10 OE-A. Does anyone know if the PSP290 and MapThis! works on this version? I'm using 2.71 usbacc.prx and 3.03 usbgps.prx which I downloaded from the links the OP listed.

Basically what is happening is I open up the MapThis! v0.4.98, it asks me to select a map, which is empty but I press the O key which loads the Sydney maps that I have downloaded and it displays the map. When I drive around, I press the [Start] key, scroll to "GPS Info" and leave that running. It picks up at max 4 satellites but I dunno how to (if i even need to) connect to the satellites.

edit: the map now has the name i want as I renamed the folder with an "_" (underscore) in front!

I notice that my Latitude, Longitude and Bearing doesn't change even if I drive around. Isn't it meant to update as I drive around if it works?

I used the Green Proggie program after realising that its for testing if the PSP290 works, and it failed to load the first step.

Does anyone have any idea why or how I can get it working or what I'm doing wrong? Any help is MUCH MUCH appreciated! :D

Cheers!

Which PSP Firmware versions are working for PSP-290 GPS adapter without problem? As 2.50 or 2.60 or 2.71 etc....

When deniska releases his next version, PRX files will be loaded from firmware instead of from the MapThis folder. For this, you'll need at least 2.70 (homebrew enabled obviously :)).

The PSP-290 and Map this v0.5+ works fine on 3.52 M33-4 and even on a Slim running 3.71 M33 if you dump your own .prx files and decrypt the encrypted files with Team m33 firmware dumper.

Im running three PSPs "Fat" with 3.52 M33-4 and one slim running 3.71 M33 and it works great with MapThis v0.5

Thats great news
People sometimes have problem extracting .prx files and on the 3.71 Fw its a bit tricky for noobs ;)

Okay I have read many threeads on this site and others about MapThis.....though I still have a number of questions

1) Does it work in Australia?

2) http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bh-49-en-70-1mij.html
Do I need the above device for MapThis to work?
Is the the above device the best to get?

3) Does it work with 3.71 M33-2 (which is the firmware i have)

PS.........I have PSP Fat

Thanks in advance

1) You can use all the maps with Map This which are present in Google Earth and in Microsoft Virtual Earth, so most of the World. Download the GMDL tool and look how detailed Australia is, because what you see is what you get. (You download the maps).
2)Yes you need a GPS device if you want to know where You are on the map, without a GPS you can use Map This as a map viewer, which is bretty useful thought, so try it before you buy it (the GPS)
You can buy the Sony GPS, but some Holux GPS'es are also supported, if you live in a big city, it is recommended to use Holux device, because Sony GPS has problems getting the lock-on on satellites, but I'm satisfied with it.
3) Yes it should work with 3.71 M33-2

PS... Next time post a new topic if you need help.

here's my setup:
Firmware 3.52 M33
GPS-290
usb prx's from 3.52 eboot
MapThis v 5

I am able to load the program, and gps can be "turned on", but no dice so far locking in a signal. GPS status says off in the info screen. I believe I downgraded a TA82 mobo but not sure what mine is.

Does anyone know where or how to get maps for Beijing to use with MapThis? I have Mapthis on my PSP and it works fine but Google with GMDL doesn't seem to support creating maps for Beijing. It shows the map of Beijing but when I click the button to create the maps in a folder, I only get blank squares with the little 'x' in the upper left coener of each box and nothing is put into the folder that I created.
Please give me a link to download the maps or step by step directions........sorry but I am really new to this and need to be guided around like a baby. Thank you

can someone help me, i can't get mapthis and GMDL to work properly.
i'm using psp 1001 cfw 5.00 m33-3, i use gps 290 and i'm running on 1.50 kernel

problem on mapthis!:
-the usb gps state is always off how can i turn it on?

oyeah i think i don't have any usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx, cos when i toggled flash (0), i don't have KN folder, i have KM folder and there's no usbaac and usbgps prx. so i download the 2.71 usbacc.prx and 3.03 usbgps.prx from 'yet another FAQ for mapthis' page, and put it in on mapviewer folder, and on flash (0), but the gps still don't work.

i also tried the keycleaner, still not working...

problem on GMDL:
-i'm using gmdl ver.0508b and when i opened the exe file the program wont show the map, i tried typing town, state, country, but still wont show a thing.how am i supposed download the map if i can't even see the map? huhu

anyone can help me??? oyeah i live in indonesia

thank you guys :)

Hello everyone, I like the program very much and is easy to use, the only issue I have is that the program locks up solid every now and then. I have to shut off the PSP and restart to do it all over again. Anyone else have this issue? other than that, works great and a cool program to have on my PSP when traveling. I'm running 5.00 M33-3 with the 1.50 kernal add-on and this is a phat 1001 psp. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Its a drag restarting it and waiting some time for a GPS lock and traveled a few miles already before lock is in the green..thanks:)

Does it lock up after returning from stand by? That's to be expected, because then the pointers to the map tiles are lost. You can go back to the map overview and reselect your map.

Otherwise, you can try disabling any seplugins you may have.

I'm using MapThis! for over three years now all over the world. It is very convenient to be able to produce free maps for almost any place of interest and use them without internet connection.
However recently I had to switch to HTC phone with windows mobile 6.5 OS and iGo navigation. It has its uses, but lacks in universality (for example, no maps for Japan).
So I wonder if it possible to port MapThis! to windows mobile OS?

Hi all, had a PSP for a few years and upgraded fw to version 6.00 the other week. I think this was a mistake as I've also just bought a PSP-290 and seem to be having major problems getting it hooked up. I'm a total newbie to all this hacking stuff but from what I gather I think I need to downgrade or dump my current FW and instal ver 3.10. but I'm unsure how to go about this. I've downloaded PSARDumper but this is just a number of files and a few folders. I placed them in my GAME folder but when I try to run them the PSP tells me the file is corrupt. Am I missing something here or have I really messed up my PSP by putting FW6.00 on it?
