The Windows Phone 8 operating system has shown encouraging signs of growth over the past 12 months, having trebled its market share in the UK.
Sales of Nokia and HTC devices have played a significant role in boosting the uptake for Windows Phone 8. HTC’s 8S and 8X smartphones have proved to be particularly popular, with initial supplies unable to meet demand.
However, the Windows phone 8 OS still runs on just 5.9 per cent of smartphones in the UK, according to figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The crown for the UK’s most popular operating system continues to sit with Android, with 54.4 per cent market share, while Apple comes in at second with 32.4 per cent market share.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: :Among the handset manufacturers, Samsung has held onto the number one spot in Britain, claiming 35% of smartphone sales, although Apple is now biting at its heels with 32%. Nokia is experiencing something of a turnaround in Britain with its smartphone share at 6.2% and actual sales growing by over 50% compared with last year. Meanwhile, BlackBerry continues to find trading tough in the run up to the BlackBerry 10 release; however, its 9320 handset gave it a boost over Christmas with two-thirds bought as gifts.”
