"We are in an industry where, if the main character doesn't hold a gun, designers don't know what to do."
Cage expressed the importance of divergence and reaching out to new audiences, and called for a focus on the thoughts of players, not their thumbs.
He also spotlighted the importance of players' buying decisions. "Buy crap and you will get more crap," he said. "Buy exciting and ambitious games and you will get more of them."
Cage has previously spoken out in criticism (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/386083/sequels-kill-creativity-and-innovation-david-cage/) of the modern games industry's heavy reliance on sequels, claiming that "sequels kill creativity and innovation".
