A new bug found on Galaxy S3 handsets lets users bypass the lock screen and access all phone functions.
Discovered by Sean McMillan and posted to the Full Disclosure (http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2013/Mar/50) mailing list, the bug enables the user to access the phones functions by pressing just a few buttons.
McMillan has tested the bypass method on three different S3 handsets and publications Mashable, The Verge, andZDNet have all successfully unlocked phones.
To find out if your Galaxy S3 is vulnerable, here’s McMillan’s bypass method:
- On the code entry screen, press Emergency Call
- Press Emergency Contacts
- Press the Home button once
- Just after pressing the Home button, press the Power button quickly
- If successful, pressing the Power button again will bring you to the S3's home screen
At the time of writing Samsung has not commented on the bug.
