Forty years ago today, inventor and pioneer Martin Cooper called a competitor, stating, "I'm calling you from a cell phone, a real handheld portable cell phone."
This first call was on a Motorola DynaTAC device - capable of a mere 35 minutes of talktime at most.
On April 3rd, 1973 Motorola held a press conference in New York to show off the first mobile phone call, giving Cooper a fantastic opportunity to ring competitor Dr Joel S Engel, head of Bell Labs.
Since then, the mobile phone has evolved - just a little. From handhelds to folding phones to folding keyboards to touchscreens and now, essentially, mobile computers that just happen to make phone calls as well.
Happy birthday mobile phones - we expect a lot more from you in the years to come.
