Is it possible to use a wireless receiver on my XBox 360 that isn't the official one? Doesn't it need to be 802.a or something? You have to download the software from Xbox.com onto a datastick and then install it from that, right?

There's one by Datel which I bought. It works well but is harder to install than the one by MS.
