Apple recently announced the App Store was approaching its 50 billionth unique app download (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/apple-app-store-approaches-50-billion-app-downloads/021263), a significant growth on launching with 500 apps in July 2008.
Two weeks later, and unsuspecting Say The Same Thingdownloader Brandon Ashmore pockets a $10,000 App Store gift card for taking the company to the benchmark.The 50bn milestone is based on uniques and excludes re-downloads and updates.
Customers download more than 800 apps from the App Store per second, which is equivalent to over two billion a month.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of internet software and services, said: "Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded.
"The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years."
