Prior reports have strongly tipped a late 2013 launch (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/381346/xbox-720-holiday-2013-release-date-planned-bloomberg/) for the new Xbox, which is expected to go head-to-head with Sony's PlayStation 4, which already has a confirmed 'Holiday 2013' launch window.
Greenberg also promised an in-depth 'behind the scenes' look at its new console at the May 21 event, and 'tons of exclusive' games to be unveiled at the follow-up E3 event on June 10.
"We have so much goodness that there's no way we could have packed it all into one event," said Greenberg.
"The best way I can describe it is, we're really gong to tell one story across two events. So we're going to start on the 21st [of May] and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform and our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment. We definitely have a lot of surprises planned.
"People are going to get a great inside look at the making of the new platform and the team that brought it to life. To be honest it's really about the team, the people here. That's why we're inviting people to campus - we're going to bring them behind the scenes a little bit. We've never done this before, so it's really exciting to be able to do that."
Greenberg went on, "It's a lot of laying the foundation, and then just a couple weeks later we go to E3, and E3 is all about the games. It's going to be tons of exclusives [and] world premiers.
"And obviously even beyond that we have a lot to share between then and this holiday."
The company has already confirmed (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/404752/microsoft-to-show-next-chapter-of-xbox-at-gamescom/) plans to show the "next chapter of Xbox gaming experiences" at this year's Gamescom expo, which runs from August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany.
CVG has begun its countdown to the big Xbox reveal on May 21 with a live blog through here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/405949/live-blog/live-blog-countdown-to-the-next-xbox/).
