Microsoft OS now has 8.4 per cent share, compared to 4.0 per cent a year ago.
Smartphone users in the UK appear to be showing something of a growing penchant for Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, after sales figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech revealed that the OS has doubled its market share from 4.0 per cent 12 months, to 8.4 per cent in 2013, Mobile Magazine (http://www.mobiletoday.co.uk/News/25501/Britons_getting_behind_Windows_Phone.aspx) has reported.
While the Windows Phone OS has grown overall, it is the current crop of Windows Phone 8 devices that have been the most positively received.
Elsewhere, the study showed that Apple is responding to Android’s growing success in the entry level smartphone market, with the competitive pricing of its handsets placing the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 among the UK’s six bestselling devices.
However, this could not prevent Apple’s year-on-year market share fall by 5.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, Android maintained its dominance in the UK, occupying an impressive 56.9 per cent of the market, which is up 13.6 per cent on last year.
Elsewhere, BlackBerry’s market share plummeted 58.8 per cent over the past 12 months, despite the launch of BlackBerry 10 earlier this year.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “Android and iOS continue to take the lion’s share of smartphone sales in Britain. However, Windows phones are becoming increasingly popular with consumers.”
