4G operator joins coalition of firms discussing development of new software.
EE has pledged its support for a new operating system branded Ubuntu by joining a coalition of international operators, which will look to develop the new software,Mobile Today (http://www.mobiletoday.co.uk/News/25696/EE_backing_new_Ubuntu_operating_system.aspx) has reported.
Alongside Deutsche Telekom, Korea Telecom, Telecom Italia, LG UPlus, Portugal Telecom and SK Telecom, EE has become the latest operator to join the coalition, indicating that it may well be a launch partner for the first Ubuntu handsets when they land later this year.
The carrier advisory group will have regular meetings to discuss standards, ecosystems, the ability to port apps from Android and BlackBerry and revenue share models for publishers, operators and manufacturers.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, the developer behind the OS, commented: “While Ubuntu has gained tremendous traction in both cloud and PC environments, we recognise the complex dynamics of the mobile market and so the CAG allows us to draw on the insights and support of such a thoughtful and experienced group of industry partners. We aim to deliver a platform that delights everyone who touches it and meets industry requirements of quality, security, manageability and differentiation.”
