New tablet/laptop hybrid is designed to support entertainment and business in equal measures.
Tonight's Samsung Premiere saw the full Galaxy S4 family greeted with open arms (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/samsung-premiere-2013-meet-the-galaxy-s4-family/021685) and the launch of the 4G-enabled, Android-based Galaxy NX camera. Following the reveal of the little green robot-powered devices, Samsung moved on to discuss its Windows-fuelled ATIV range.
Patrick Povel, head of European ATIV Marketing, said: "We've taken the outstanding Galaxy DNA and incorporated it into Windows OS-based devices; the ATIV family. We've redesigned and recreated the ATIV from scratch to provide the mobility and power performance that people demand."
He has a point. Despite revealing two 'tablets,' it's the ATIV Q that really shines due to its ability to run both Android and Windows 8 simultaneously, with users able to switch between OSs at the touch of a button.
That means users can play Android games on the Windows platform when excessive use of Microsoft Word begins to become too laborious. The device also comes with a 13.3-inch screen, 3200x1800 qHD+ resolution and 178-degree viewing angle.
"Size is great, but size alone isn't enough. The device is so bright that it can be used outdoors in very bright sunlight, and it automatically senses where you aware to adapt depending on lighting conditions," added Povel.
Battery life lasts for nine hours, while there is a keyboard found beneath the screen which effectively transforms the tablet into a laptop. Naturally, S-Pen support is also available for those wishing to get creative.
The hybrid gizmo is 13.9mm thin, weighs 1.29kg and is made from magnesium.
Meanwhile, the Q's sister device, the 10.1-inch ATIV Tab 3, runs on Windows 8 – the full version, not RT – is 8.2mm thin and weighs 550g. The battery life is 8.5 hours, S-Pen is supported, and the tablet comes bundled with MS Office 2013.
