After completing San Andreas my three-year-old ps2 has decided to give up. It now makes a strange grinding sound from the disc tray when I try to load a game and wont play any games or DVDs. Can anyone offer any advice on fixing the problem. It's not under waranty now so should I take it apart in a bid to get it working again?

Congratualtions you bought a PS2 - they are incredibly unreliable when compared to the life span of most other consoles.
Theres a couple of things you can try;

- use a CD/DVD laser lens cleaner
- physically clean the lens with a q-tip and some alcohol.
- tweak the laser pot, this involves twisting a small white gear.
- clean the poles that the laser runs on
-check the small white plastic bit that is on the laser that sticks out and moves along the pole that rotates, if the edge is worn you need a new one (£5 eBay)
- Re-calibrate laser (not recommended) this involves varying your laser strength by turning a variable resistor on the laser unit.
- Replace laser - about £25-30 on eBay.
- Buy a new PS2, this is the easiest and you get a new slimline one for £100

For most of the self-fix/clean methods above there are tutorials that can be found on google, good luck.
