The maniacs at Tom's Hardware behind the solar Wii have done it again, this time making a solar Nintendo device that's a bit more portable. Yes, they've brought their sun-loving ways to the DS Lite, making a version that lets you have marathon Mario Kart DS sessions without needing to plug in and get rejoiced.

Personally, I'm not exactly a whiz with the soldering iron, so I'd be afraid of accidentally fusing two of my fingers together, but this looks like a pretty sweet project for the more handy of you out there, so be sure to check out their step-by-step guide showing how they created this monster.

Could possibly be the most impractical modification I've seen. But still, some moron had to do it!

Wait for the visor attachment. It folds out off the sides and shades the two screens.

Ice_Man you're wrong. You can close your DS and let the batter charge up then you can play without the solar panels. Notice the hinges.

and was saying that you needed to be in the sun to use the solar panel.

Makes sense if you can charge the battery cells using direct sunlight. I'm in a place where there are places there are no electricity. You may run out of water, but you can still play the DS until heat stroke kicks in.

This is old, or at least the concept is. A GBASP sized version that works on PSP, DS, and GBASP was released within a year of the DS release.

Instead of putting a hinge, couldnt they just have glued the Solar Panels on the DS itself?

You can get "emergency chargers" for the DS Lite that are similar to the ones you see in poundshops for mobile phones, powered by 4 AAA batteries. The now gone Lik-Sang sold them the cheapest (about half what other places are asking)

And solar-powered battery chargers can be had at a fair price, Maplin`s a good place. I`ve a few and at the very least my digital camera costs nothing to run :)

Simply, this is my opinion:

YOU CHARGE IT WHILST IN SUNLIGHT!

then...

when it dark, you can play as long as you want. Maybe they have made it so you leave the solar panel attachment seperately in the sun, and acts like the AC adaptor so then if your ds is flat it like having a seperate battery, much like I do with my old SP battery.

Makes sense, although it is a little big, it still has it's uses, and laos if for say you were going on a long trip, then you could charge it, whilst playing. It's like recycling, the possibilities are endless. (A can may be made into a plane or a bus or quite possibly, another can.)

Yeah, it looks good, but consider the problems.

1. It has bad battery life, considering that it gives almost double the DS's normal amps, it must mean that a lot is wasted in charging.

2. It is the bad shape, to charge it needs to be open, why is it on hinges anyways?

3. It's far to fragile, things like that are bound to get scratched or damaged, plus if it closed, you may mistake it for your black GBASP.
