Nintendo continues steamrolling the competition with the DS, and now they've got another territory deep in their pockets. IGN Australia (danke, Kotaku) has the announcement that 500,000 DS units have been sold in Australia since the February 2005 launch. As a point of comparison, IGN says Xbox 360 has pushed 157,000 units in its first year. That's not exactly a fair comparison, though -- handhelds and consoles have completely different markets.

Alongside the good news is word that Australian telecommunications company Telstra has teamed up with Nintendo to provide over 1,000 new free wi-fi access points for the DS active immediately. The locations include McDonalds, Starbucks, airports, hotels, and more. If you're living down under and want to know where you can grab a piece of the wi-fi action, check out Telstra's Wireless Hotspot Listing Spreadsheet (http://www.telstra.com.au/wirelesshotspots/docs/wireless_hotspots.xls).
