Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki believes consoles must be more innovative to survive as the industry continues its expansion and diversification.
In a Famitsu feature piece translated by Polygon (http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/17/4530912/more-japanese-devs-give-their-e3-likes-and-dislikes), Itagaki reflected on this year’s E3 – concluding that console companies won’t be able to maintain relevance in a suddenly crowded market by doing the same things they’ve always done in the past.
“In a world where our customers now have their attention divided by their PCs, their tablets and their smartphones, simply having consoles expand upon what they previously were isn’t going to work any longer.”
“Having a system that just reads controller input, makes a screen image and outputs it to the TV isn’t going to work, no matter how rich the media it’s producing.
“It seems like every first party is trying to get a feel for what makes a console truly special, and that’s something developers are going to have to feel on, too.”
The piece also contained similar musings from Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sonic director Takashi Iizuka and Capcom producer Motohide Eshiro; while other Japanese developers such as Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase and Level-5 boss Akihiro Hino seemed excited about the upcoming hardware transition.
