HP is set to launch a budget tablet through Walmart to target the back to school demand.
According to DigiTimes (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20130724PD213.html), The HP tablet will sell for $99 and will have a 7-inch touch panel and Intel’s Medfield-based single-core processor.
Anonymous sources told the website that the tablet will be manufactured by BYD, making it the second tablet that HP has outsourced to the China-based maker.
If the rumours are true, this will be the first time HP has launched a tablet for under $100. However, back in 2011, the firm did slash the price of its TouchPad from $499 to $99 in a bid to clear out inventory due to weak demand.
Acer’s Iconia B1 (http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/acer-reveals-budget-iconia-tablet/029939) is also a 7-inch budget tablet, which the firm released for under £100 earlier this year. Asus has also recently extended its budget-friendly tablet range with the MeMO Pad HD 7 (http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/asus-announces-memo-pad-hd-7-tablet-will-hit-uk-in-august/031164), although this device is a little pricier at £149.
