Custom firmware 3.40 OE-A released already !!

Dark Alex has released a new Custom Firmware for the PSP that supports the very latest firmware


Changes 3.30 OE-A -> 3.40 OE-A

- Updated from 3.30 firmware to 3.40

- Security patch: Fixed a bug that has been in all 3.XX OE, that caused random data to be written to a location
in lcdc.prx or (in worst case) emc_sm.prx ram space.

- Autboot that is missing since 3.03 OE-C has been reimplemented.

- Improvements in the flasher. It will now generate also the flash1 directories, and it will
check that the dxar is the correct for this update, so no more bricks by accidentally using
other DATA.DXAR.


Note about pops. I recommend people to backup their savedata before proceeding to change them
(Sony has changed the savedata format, and they force you to change the format in 3.40 if you want to play them).
If a plugin to load previous firmwares pops appear, the savedata will have to be in the old format for those firmwares,
that's why it is better to have a backup of them. Psx savedatas are in /PSP/SAVEDATA/[code of game]

Or you could also download 3.30 OE A' which is pretty much the same thing if you don't want a complete new install.
This update requires 3.30 OE to be installed.

Copy the 330_oea2update directory to /PSP/GAME150 in your memstick, and run it.

Anyone had any issues with their PS1 game saves? some of my psx eboots that work on 3.03 OE C didnt work on 3.30 OE A, (the game cannot be started) unless this 3.30 OE A 2 has sorted that? i havent tried any of them yet and its prob best to stick with 3.30 OE A 2 and wait for 3.40 OE updates

Do you even know how downgraders work, it't your fault even if you didn't update it yourself. The homebrew community has been around for long now.

EDIT: Wow, I just noticed! Sometime ago, when I had 1.50 in order to copy a save file you needed to swap Memory Sticks multiple times (even 8 times!!!). Now I see EVERYTHING needs 1 time only. Wow, that's an improvement I just noticed.

No freeze for me:)
It may have been your theme's fault. Some older top_menu.rcos did not work because they didn't have the Remote Play icon, the Online Instruction Manuals icon, etc...

Well thats messed up my sleep, was about to goto bed and thought id do a last webcheck for any homebrew updates. Looks like im going to be up for a while now, lol. Only just upgraded to 3.30 OE-A a few days ago, installed 3.30 OE-A', but figured might aswell go the whole way and try out 3.40. DXAR file takes ages though, sigh. Look. My PSP's screen went white when i put a custom 480x272 01-12.bmp, I was barely able to see the letters, I went to the theme settings, make sure you disable any wallpapers you have and make sure you set the first theme (January's one, the silver one). Then turn off your PSP. Open it again. That worked for me.
But you said you can't access any settings... What can I say, that's really weird...
BUT, you said you replaced all rco's with the original ones.
But I don't think you've put the 3.40 ones... If you put 3.30 ones, or previous, then sorry, but you have to reinstall 3.40 OE.

They are Japanese services.
PlayStation Spot are just some PSP hotspots in Japan (not sure about US) and Portable TV is a Japanese-only service where you watch some Japanese channels online. You can only access these icons if you put the fake region hack to Japan. To use custom top_menu.rcos make sure you set the fake region to America.

I don't think there's need for a POPS compatibility thread. It runs most games of the PlayStation perfectly. There are few of them that don't run 100%, and we know them.

Really? The problem I'm anticipating is for games that worked on 3.02 and nothing else. For example Mortal Kombat Trilogy only works for me with the 3.02 pops plugin. And some games just worked better on 3.02 than 3.03 and 3.10.

Yo, I need help....it seems that everytime I upgrade to a new custom firmware, my flash0 space keeps lessening and lessening, and I'm not able to fully customize my XMB. What can I do about this problem? Should I just stay at a lower firmware or is there a way to increase the size of the flash0, or even delete some unnecessary crap in the folder? Thanks in advance..

I have no such problem. I updated to 3.40 OE-A from 3.03 OE-C.

To mfz64: Of course the space in flash is getting less, each Sony upgrade adds more stuff to it! Not to mention Custom Firmware adds a ton more stuff to it as well...

As for gaining some space, there was a program that would erase an unneeded file to give you more space in the flash, but I forgot what program it was.

LONG *Maybe Helpful* POST regarding Resident Evil 2

I remember posting somewhere that if you start the Tofu or Hunk mini game using CWCheat you can go all the way to the Sewer (With the Spiders) but if you attempt to climb the ladder (Which leads to the Dog Kennel in the RPD Station) the game will freeze.If you want to explore more,and if you have the Dual Shock Version,you can use CWCheat to unlock Extreme Battle Mode. Now the weird thing is that you can play everywhere in the Lab and in the empty underground station.However when you enter the trolley (Where you would've fought the William Birkin Claw with Ada in the regular game) it freezes when you get off. Therefore it just doesn't freeze when you attempt to enter the RPD station the regular way infact it freezes when you try to enter the RPD Station PERIOD (Well you can hear the music but you just get a black screen :P) So disappointing to know that it can run all those other parts,which is infact incredibly far in the actual game, yet it can't run anything in the RPD Station.However I heard that one person was able to get inside it but the game crashed for him when he attempted to go in the room to fight the Licker (Im thinking they used a PSX Emu save to get to this point,could be possible ;)).Also there is one other method someone could try that I haven't done already, they can possibly use the "Play 2nd Scenario on 1st Game" cheat to atleast get inside the back courtyard of the RPD station,though I doubt it they can be able to pass through the door which leads to the RPD station. I even tried Location codes but they never work for me (Though someone might be able to get them to work) but now Im sure your all wondering what are the cheats well here they are...

I have no intention of forbidding people from showing their gratitude and that was not the intention of my post. I just would like to see something more interesting and substantial in a thread. Anyone who wants REAL discussion would be hard pressed to carry on any real discourse when they have to wade through 5 pages of posts that are only 7 words long followed by a signature that takes up more space than their post. If that's not the case, why are my bug reports (praise included) never considered? Even when I post them on other forums, they just get drowned in lame posts. The only luck I've had is going through other coders who speak to DAX (and others) on a regular basis.

Though I don't care for your negative criticism since I thought my idea of why the new update would be useful considering the topic of updating PS1 save games, at least you have found a thought provoking and interesting way to show your support for Dark_Alex. Maybe you just hate PS1 compatibility between PSP and PS3 save games. :rolleyes:

Perhaps there should be seperate threads dedicated to discussion and 7 word praise posts. Or there should be more of a shoutbox for the short posts so they expire and the truly useful discussion posts can be preserved. Besides, I don't think Dark_Alex even reads these boards. At least he doesn't post here. He probably doesn't care if the praise posts are here or not. Or maybe he does. I don't ask for a complete Comp. list with a new topic either, some major titles like RE 2 and FF 8 don't work at all. Its certandly some info about one of those games that kayhan wanted.

I'm still on 3.10 oe a' and I wont upgrade until a major comp. fix before upgrading.

If you live in teh US and use the US version of FF8 it works but it will crash when trying to draw then cast magic and when you battle Diablos. Does anyone know if FF8 works better on 3.40 or should i just stay on 3.30 OE-A'

See I thought that the files that the emulator on the PC would be similar to the ones used on the PSP, if not there maybe there is an patch/converter to make it PSP format?

I haven't tried it but I think there's a way to load your PC saves through CWCHEAT.

But I've read that people tried loading their RE2 saves past the police station and the game also freezes in several other places.

Hi,

I installed 3.40 OE-A and everything is fine. I tried using the Autoboot and it works fine for CIntro but after the CIntro is over it displays the "Sony Computer Entertainment" screen and if i disable the SCE screen it disables the CIntro too and goes straight to the XMB.

Can anyone help me?

Yes,you won't have any problem to update. You can upgrade from any Homebrew enabled firmware.

Dude i got Diablos months ago, all u have 2 do is rip him apart with GFS that way when he attacks he only hits your GFS, cause I dont use the draw magic method . I got through the whole battle without a scatch but u gatta cast it quick or u will get damaged.

To mfz64: Of course the space in flash is getting less, each Sony upgrade adds more stuff to it! Not to mention Custom Firmware adds a ton more stuff to it as well...

As for gaining some space, there was a program that would erase an unneeded file to give you more space in the flash, but I forgot what program it was.

As said by others before, I think that would be a bad solution, not just because it would be not very nice to flood his Inbox. Also I believe that developers like DaX who offer their work for free do it of course for fun and use it them self but also a little bit for acknowledgment on the Internet. I am sure that they at least sometimes enjoy browsing through threads like these in some forums randomly ;)

First of all, i never said that you said he was wrong. I was just pointing out facts.

Second, him getting an email account especially for fanmail is not a bad idea either. If he gets one, it's his choice whether or not he reads them, just as if it's his choice, using his time, whether or not he reads the posts on these forums.

Yes, already converted games should work fine. You should not have to reconvert any PS1 games to work properly on 3.40 OE unless you did not convert them correctly in the first place.

So far, I've seen nothing but good things with 3.40 OE. No problems experienced yet. I will be upgrading another PSP to 3.40 OE shortly.

I'm mainly interested in learning about any POPS compatibility differences between 3.30 OE-A' and 3.40 OE-A. If there are any....

My question is: if something were to happen in the upgrade process, or I don't like the new version, whats the easiest way to restore my current config? Those are features that are available to those in Japan only. If its a Japanese PSP, it makes sense that those features show up on that PSP and not the other.

Yes, SpooForBrains...Flash Agent works. I'm using the latest version and it worked,it reads the firmware as 3.03 OE-C,weird.

ETA: Holy Crap! I bought a new Sandisk 4GB recently, and creating the DXAR is SO much faster than it was using my Sony 2GB. It used to take over an hour to generate, and that was done in about five minutes. Guess that Sony stick (probably a fake ... which makes me uneasy considering I've updating using it several times, gah!) will be going in the bin!

Hey I just noticed my Tomba! 2 psx game doesn't work anymore, it loads the "Sony Computer Entetainment of America Presents" screen but just stays to a black screen after that. I don't get it though this game used to work on my custom firmwares, I even tried a different eboot with different save numbers. I'm not sure what the problem is but has anyone else been experiencing problems like this with Tomba! 2?

If you are using any official SONY firmware above 3.03, you are out of luck I'm afraid.

You would need to be on 1.50 or a previous OE custom firmware to install 3.40 OE-A.

If you are on SONY 3.40 you will likely not be able to enjoy homebrew with that PSP for a LONG time, if ever.

If you cannot or will not get another PSP, the only advice I can give you is to NEVER UPGRADE AGAIN and hope for an exploit and downgrader one day.

Erm something is wrong.....I did this 4 times and it does the same thing. (I did this from 1.50, if I had the problem, I downgraded again)

I download a fresh 1.50 eboot and a 3.40 eboot, run the update maker, generator a dxar file, copy it to the flasher (as the readme says) then I update from 1.50 but it converted my PSP to Japanese as the buttons are switched during install and the default language and time settings are set for Japan...but my PSP is a UK one :S
and then again, I can't access configurations in the recovery menu at all throughout the 4 times, I even downloaded the easy installer and installed that...the same problem, could it be something wrong with flash1? I need help

It doesnt surprise me that your tomba 2 is incompatible because my hercules game gets a huge black bar on the bottom of the screen, even worse i didnt back up the save for that game...

now this is some weird shit, you said you downloaded a fresh 1.5 and 3.4 eboots, maybe you get the ones for japan

but this is really strange though, because since I got my 1.5 eboot for a downgrader I´ve never worried again about te upgrade´s region (maybe i got lucky gettin the right ones, lol)

it may be since mine is US
try getting the upgrades from here www.psp-hacks.com

PS: don´t know why you bother to get to 1.50 again since you can update from previous custom firmware (I do it this way and it works perfectly everytime)

Might be though but I did update already from 3.03 OE C straight to 3.40OE the first time but the problem of the configuration menu freezing and shuting down my PSP every time and then I recovered to 1.50 using the recovery folder and the 1.50 eboot but ever since then, my PSP kept going to Japanese

but the updates are english, I downloaded the 3.40 from the us sony website but the 1.50 (which I have always used for updating) from PSPudates website

So I haven't a clue what's wrong Mike_img, it's starting to really annoy me now grrrrrr

Try putting them in game150, or use recovery mode to set the game folder kernel version to 1.5 instead of 3.40.

My problem solved, lucky I did a dump of an early OE Firmware, my problem was the 'config.se' file in flash1 seam to got corrupted

but just copy my config.se over the one in flash1 and reboot back into your recovery menu and then go to configuration menu and it works!

so I have included my config.se for anyone that has the same problem as me

hey an1 have a problem with psx emu after updating to 3.40 oe.
My game (Chrono Cross ntsc cd1) is allways crashing after 30 min of gameplay....i dont check on others psx game but it never crash on my old 3.03 oe-C. Any sugestions?

You probably have them in PSP/GAME not PSP/GAME150. Either move them into GAME150 or go into recovery mode and set the kernel mode version for the game version to 1.5.

i have 3.40 oe and chrono cross is crashing for me at very begining of game.After 15-30 min it going to freezzz.
Any one have that problem or it is somthing with my psp.

i am using ntsc disco of chrono cross.

maybe i should downgrate to 3.30 oe to play on chronno cross normaly without problems....

umm... hi, i was thinking of using this oe-a thing.. and well, im at 1.5 firmware and ive always used the 1.5 firmware since i figured out there were dev hooks and emulators and i downgraded it..
but does these oe-a work on other emulators then playing ps1 games? ..and im talking about things that work on 1.5, like gba emulator, nes, snes, gbc, n64, neo geo.. and other stuff.. plus doom-psp and quake-psp.. please tell me.. :confused:
becaus im not gonna update to 3.40 oe-a unless i know what im doing (i also DO have the ps1 games for psp)

i have spent a few days on it but i havnt got it working yet. the last one i tried was to install dark alex's 3.40. i do all that is required on the installation instructions but when i run the file that are saved on the PSP/game folder, it says "this application cannot be run".
i dont really know wat to do, i know that you prob get a lot of these questions but i really appreciate any help from anyone.

What firmware version is on the psp right now?

Well what version PSP do you have, go to system information, if you have 3.40 your screwed. You have to have a 3.03 or lower firmware so you can downgrade it and then after you downgrade to 1.5 THEN is when you can get to 3.40 OE-A (or any custom firmware). This is the only way you can get the CF's working, right now there are only 3.03 downgraders now, 3.40 one will take A WHILE. Trust me, and please remember the downgraders that do come out are from regular people taking time to make them for FREE, so you can't rush them they'll get it out when they can (it's a long hard proccess because you have to find a leak or hole in the official Sony firmwares). Good luck!

yes. after you upgrade put all of your 1.50 homebrew into a folder called GAME150 witch you will have to create in the PSP folder.

Soz for the double post before, my internet was spazzing out. Anyways i have remembered that on previous firmwares you used x-flash to remove the psp logo but since x-flash only works up to 3.10 so whats the other alternative to remove it?

1. Do you mean the popstation files which normally is included in Older firmwares?
If so, Popstation is built in for this firmware. All you need to do is download something like PSX2PSP, convert it and drag 'n drop onto the GAME folder.

Yes, but don't the Base.pbp and Pops.exe update with each new custom firmware? Sorry, I'm confused XP...Is the last PSX2PSP the final pops converter? I'm still on 3.03 OE that's why I have so many questions...plus I want to update my pops library now that the code fix for previously unplayable games is out.

It's talking about the update maker program. OEUPDMAKER. Put 150.pbp and 340.pbp in that directory, transfer OEUPDMAKER and %OEUPDMAKER into PSP/GAME and then run it from your PSP.

On my Sandisk stick it took somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. On my Sony 2GB it took upwards of an hour.

You can't downgrade anything over 3.03 yet. Sorry, man, but until and exploit is discovered for 3.40 you're stuck with the official Sony firmware. And no, no one knows how long that will take, so there's no point asking. It could be weeks, it could be never.
