iOS grows 5.2 per cent to 30.5 per cent of the British smartphone market.
During the three month period before June, Apple has experienced a 5.2 per cent growth, increasing to 30.5 per cent of the British smartphone market, boosted by consumers new to Apple attracted by the lower and more competitive price of the iPhone 4, revealed Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Even though the iPhone 5 drove Apple's recent global results, it was the iPhone 4 that encouraged the increase of much of the market share.
More than a third of iPhone 4's sold were to first time customers compared to just one in 10 new customers to iPhone 5.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: "Margins are tighter at the entry-level end of the market, but as consumers become more engaged with their level smartphone they are increasingly prepared to invest more when they upgrade.
"Apple boasts the highest level of customer loyalty of the operating systems, and by capturing consumers at entry-level it is in a good position to grow customer base in future."
iOS is slowly making a comeback, however its competitor Android still owns the UK market as a whole with 56.2 per cent, as it is across five other european markets including Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/android-takes-the-lead-in-european-smartphone-sales/021775).
Even though Nokia are lagging behind the likes of Apple and Android, it has recently launched the budget Nokia Lumia 625 (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/nokia-releases-200-lumia-625-to-battle-androids-lower-prices-devices/021963) which includes all the features expected from the 4G Lumia without the price tag in a bid to win back some fans.
So it appears that its the cheaper the better, and with 87 per cent of devices sold in Great Britain being smartphones, its a market that is just going to get more competitive.
Sunnebo continued: "With almost 19 million feature phone owners left in Britain, there is still a lot of iOS and the other platforms to compete for."
