New from uwe (http://palib.info/forum/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?forum=28&post_id=18094#forumpost18094)

DSTalker is a freeware application, running on NintendoDS, designed as a speaking aid for nonspeaking people.
It is intended to introduce nonspeaking people to electronical speaking aids. I wrote this program for my son Anselm. The aim is to give him the ability to express some of his wishes more clearly, encourage him to repeat the spoken words and, through visualising the written word on the upper screen, I hope to initialize some letter recognition.

If this is similar to those text-to-speech programs then it`s an EXCELLENT idea, the touch pad would compliment it brilliantly.

No its not similar to those TTS programs. Actually I don't have the ability to write a TTS engine for the DS. But the idea is the same. So I had to do something I could realize: Show a picture, play recorded sound, make some menus.
But if somebody could do TTS ... no I can't image that would be too good.

There's one text-to-speech engine for the DS that I know of, but it's very difficult to use. It's rather slow, sounds fairly bad with poor pronounciation, and the touchscreen is inaccurate, which is very frustrating since the Backspace key doesn't function either.

Nevertheless, here's a link to it. It's very old, so it may not boot on some devices. You can try launching it through Moonshell if you want.

Here is a Windows application that uses the same synth DSSpeech does, so you can get an idea of how it sounds if you can't boot the DS version:

Yes, I already knew DSSpeech. It is amazing that somebody could realize it on DS. But as you said the sound isn't really overwhelming (especially if you are german).
I was playing with that idea though but then imagined my son trying to repeat that voice.... and so the actual version (which is adaptable but not that convenient) came into life.
