Caleb (http://blandco.blogspot.com/) made a video demonstrating the Dreamcast motion sensing fishing rod in action:

Do my eyes decive me? The fishing rod is also a motion sensing controller that can be used in all games? If so the word should get out!!!!!!!!!!

that shit was awesome!
Though the rod may be limited a bit since I didnt see many different combos.. but still, never knew it was possible

The rod is indeed great fun to use with Soul Calibur, did it many times the only problem I found was not having 2 so I couldnt have fishing rod powered battles with friends in it

I must keep an eye out for a rod now. It looks pretty interesting.

The fishing rod is motion sensing, but not spatially aware. That is to say, it recognizes motion, but cannot discern position. If you were to somehow combine a lightgun and a fishing controller, then you'd get a wiimote (although it would require having a portion of it pointed at the screen at all times).

So is this fake?

So is this fake?

Absolutely not. It simply isn't the same as a Wii's controller. It can sense movement in 3D, but it just can't detect it's position.

The Dreamcast has the ability to have up to (iirc) 6 different analog inputs (inputs with 256 different positions possible). The fishing controller maps some of these to accelerometers.

The biggest difference is that the wiimote can be used as a lightgun or a pointing device as sort, and this can't really.

But how good does it work? Would it only be for sword fighting games/movements?

You can use it for most any game, it just depends on how the controls are mapped and what you feel about the type of movements needed to do whatever. That is to say, you CAN use it for most anything, but I'm sure for many games it wouldn't really make it more enjoyable.

Unofficial fishing rods also work... But what i have noticed is that the rod has only two sensors for when swinging left and right... and if the fishing rod is shaken from left to right it will only perform the same combo over and over.... to get different attack moves you have to use the analog stick + a swing to the left or right

Nonetheless, it was fun and made my left arm ache

But from what I read those have crap sensors that break easily, so might aswell get an offical.

The only reason you are only getting left/right movement to register is because that's the only thing mapped in whatever game you're playing.

The fishing controller has 3 acceleration sensors, on the x,y, and z axes (up/down, left/right/ in/out). Not only that, but it has the reel, which is another analog input source.

Not only that, but the offical fishing controller has two vibration units, so when played using a game that is made for it, it will vibrate in different parts of the controller depending on what's happening.

so technically, we shouldnt praise Nintendon't for the WiiMote cause it is just another invention that was started by SEGA? just like ow Xbox took their control pads?

No, it's just nice to know that the Dreamcast fishing rod accessory can be used for something other than what it was designed for.

this is old, lots of people knew about this when soul calibur first came out and to be honest using the rod is nothing special at all

Hey, GagaMan, it's wonderful, a pity it was not discovered sooner.

It's a new proof DC was the best console of all times.

Gagaman(n) did an awesome video on this subject!

Lets just say he makes the Wii comparison more clearly than I did.

Who knew?
