is it possible to disable region code restriction by viewing the disk using a custom program?

Yeah, if you look on the bottom of the box, it will have a DVD region code logo, if your in America then it will be a globe with a '1' on it.

My PSP is Japanese so it has a '2' on it. I'm not sure if anybody has really looked into how it works though, what with the simplicity of playing Media files on there, and the expense involved with UMD Video.

what if the region coding is in the hardware. That will be difficult to crack, hopefully its not.

I think the Video coding might be, Sony aren't usually the type to put software restrictions on anything (I think v1.0 was their first cock up on record).

Even the majority of Standalone DVD players that they make require hardware mods to disable the region control/macrovision.

Most peoples DVD players allow you to just enter a 4 digit number to disable region coding.

Not Sony one's.

My best friend had a complete Sony Home Cinema setup (TV,VCR,DVD,5.1), and the DVD Player needed to be modded in order to run anything other than Commercial R2 DVD and Audio releases, even CDRs wouldn't run.

I wouldn't mind but it was a crap DVD player anyway. ;)
