The release of the Dos Emulator for the PSP the other day from CrazyC (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=64955) wasnt easy for most to use because you have to find the files yourself but luckily the members of DCEmu have rallied together and we have Binaries, Screenshots and even a list of games working in this release.

firstly heres some screens of the emulator in action:

http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/vcih1.JPG

http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/dnkf3.JPG

Games working with the emulator include the likes of Warcraft 1, Prince of Persia 2 and Theme Park,.

This is fantastic. The games may be old school but this is certainly an accomplishment in PSP homebrew.

I hope this can play or eventually will play Dino Park Tycoon.

DOS (Disk Operating System) emulator, so technically it is a PC emulator, but only for really old things. DOS is what we had before Windows, just a command line for the user interface. It's actually about the most stable OS ever made :), darn you Windows.

This is good news for the community if they can get things working at decent speed. Commander Keen 4 FTW.

This is really great, I agree! Dos games are, as I always say, still the most original and arguably fun games there are. I get a lot of memories just by hearing the word Dos. I'd better go and find some of my old games and try 'em out! Thanks a million for this.

gelon, thanks for the screenshots. A few of those are from Alone in the Darkness, right? I remember that scene vaguely, and that I jumped when a monster suddenly came. :p

this is all great and every thing but when will a downgrader for 3.50 to 3.10 come out?

That's totally off-topic, and no, no one knows when a downgrader for 3.10-3.50 will come out, if there ever will. It's not made automatically, you know. If any of our great hackers find out a way to downgrade them, they'll surely let us know right away, so just continue waiting.

Please don't post off topic, and the answer for this is NEVER.

The effort wouldn't allow you to downgrade to 3.10, that would be ridiculous. However, any downgrading effort would make your psp return to 1.50 (psp gold). Then you would upgrade to whichever Custom firmware you choose.

As for your 3.50, please don't ask again. It will be out when it will be out. I expect 6 months, but it may not come for a year or more. Just put your 3.50 on the shelf and forget about it (that means no more upgrading).

As for the dosbox emu, I know that many older games run pretty much full speed, Airborne Ranger runs very nicely, and Ultima Underworld runs about 25% speed.

If you set keyconfig .bat files, playing more complicated games is possible, especially games like Ultima Underworld.

I think dosbox is already running at 333mhz, but I haven't checked things like frameskip (which dosbox has) and up-ing of the CPU cycles. I don't know how.

I wonder If you can install and run windows version 3.11 or 95 on this?

Chameleon
June 7th, 2007, 15:18
nope, it has a preloaded file structure... and the emulator already has a tough time emulating Dos games.

You may already know this, but if your interested their is a bochs emulator for the psp. try that and you will see how difficult emulating win95 is.

mcdougall57
June 7th, 2007, 16:40
yeah ive tried win95 with bochs and it is unusually hard

sappo
June 7th, 2007, 17:04
I wonder If you can install and run windows version 3.11 or 95 on this?

No, this is UBER-SLOW compared to BOCHS. And if it was slow and BOCHS, you can expect that it is pretty unbootable here.

Also, DOSBOX 0.60 had several problems booting Win95/98. On 0.70 Win 3.1 boots fine, but Win95 crashes. So here on 0.60 it won't surely work.

And no, I think that Linux wouldn't install.

I want Danzeff's plugin! This Keyboard is unusable!

MK2k
June 7th, 2007, 20:18
I'm pretty fine with psprint. However crazyc works on win 3.11 compatibility so don't think it won't ever work under this patched dosbox 0.60 (even if it doesn't work with the original dosbox 0.60).

Oh, man, this is great! Once the framerates come up to a nice par on a more useable level, this will be the most used emulator for my PSP. Some of my most fondest memories came from Dos games, and this will be great. Space Quest, the Keen sereis, ect. One question though, I heard there's a frame skip on this, how does it work?

Just to clear some things up all in one place:
1) It emulates DOS not windows

2) Windows 95 and other windows versions wont work because shockingly, they are NOT DOS applications

3) Enjoy

I don't know but games like Discworld are perfect for this emulator (control-wise). I own DW1 for PS1 and DW: Noir for PC. I have yet to find a non-PAL version of DW2: Morality Bytes.

heres my MW.bat file:

INPUTMAP right right
INPUTMAP down down
INPUTMAP left left
INPUTMAP triangle u
INPUTMAP square 7
INPUTMAP cross f
INPUTMAP circle d
INPUTMAP start enter
INPUTMAP select esc
INPUTMAP exec MW

btw setting up all ur games like this makes it hella easier to play. all other buttons and configs are rendered useless, so there are no conflics...simply just the buttons you setup.

Noob Tutorial - by me :)

Installing the program:

1. Copy __SCE__DOSBOX________ and %__SCE__DOSBOX________ to your PSP/GAME or PSP/GAME150 folder.
2. Copy the dosbox folder to the PSP folder. <--if you don't do this, the file navigator won't load.

Installing a game:

In this example we'll install Wolfenstein 3D to the memory stick.

1. Copy the game folder to PSP/dosbox/
2. Go into the game folder and create a file named start.bat.
3. Open the file with a text editor and paste this into it:

@ECHO OFF
INPUTMAP up up
INPUTMAP right right
INPUTMAP down down
INPUTMAP left left
INPUTMAP triangle lshift
INPUTMAP square lctrl
INPUTMAP cross lalt
INPUTMAP circle space
INPUTMAP start enter
INPUTMAP select esc
INPUTMAP exec GAMENAME

4. Notice where it says GAMENAME. You need to change that to the name of the game's executable. In this case it's wolf.exe. It should look like this when you're done:

INPUTMAP exec wolf.exe

5. Now just save it. Repeat these steps for every game you want to install. Each game has to have its own start.bat file.

Starting a game:

1. Open DOS box on your PSP. It should automatically load the DOS Navigator. If it doesn't, refer to the installation instructions above.
2. In the navigator, use the analog nub to move the mouse and press the R shoulder button twice to double-click and open things. Now just navigate to the game's folder and open the start.bat file you made earlier. DON'T open the exe, or the controls won't work.

That's all there is to it. ;)

June 9th, 2007, 01:52
In addition to the tutorial above, you can edit the dosbox settings (including frameskip, mouse sensitivity, PSP clock speed, audio settings, and memory settings) by opening the dosbox.conf file found in the __SCE__DOSBOX________ folder in a text editor & editing the file. Fiddling with this can improve speed and even allow games to work that weren't before.

I'm very excited where this program can go. There's still a lot of room for improvement (such as improved keyboard support / ir-keyboard support, speed boosts, internal configurating ability & iso support), but CrazyC has done a fabulous job so far. Keep up the good work.

I believe that the shoulder buttons are mapped I read somewhere...... though it will disable mouse clicking usage if you do this:

INPUTMAP rtrigger (keyboardvalue)
INPUTMAP ltrigger (keyboardvalue)

Also standard batch file commands work, so there really isn't too much of a need to:

INPUTMAP exec GAMENAME

You could just put:

GAMENAME

with or without extension so long as it is a com or exe file.

Drathian
June 9th, 2007, 21:27
Tracked it down seems that analog button also can be mapped to mouse or joystick and the button 1 & 2 in mouse or joystick to something else.

I've put up a new version. The triggers can now be remapped with rtrigger and ltrigger and the mouse/joystick buttons with button1 and button2. Also, mouse or joystick mode can be selected from the command line with "inputmap analog <mouse/joystick>" and remapped keys now repeat properly. I've done many changes to the input stuff so there are undoubtedly some remaining bugs. I've also fixed (worked around?) the bug that was crashing Duke Nukum 1 with sound enabled.

It'd be something like this I imagine:

INPUTMAP analog joystick
INPUTMAP triangle button1
INPUTMAP circle button2

Firstly, greetings to all forum people ;)

And now, my questions/comments:

Is anyone having problems with games not accepting the enter key?

Me. When I try to start game in Baryon and when I wanna skip the config in Jill Of The Jungle to play.

In addition to this, I checked Prince Of Persia 1. It works ok, but the movements controls doesn't work in spite of using the control config file (the .bat file). It's a little weird that Prince 2 works the controls and Prince 1 doesn't work it.

Also, I checked another games like UFO: Enemy Unknown, Heroes Of Might And Magic I and Pinball Fantasies. In UFO works only the intro because after the intro, it crashes. HOM&M I crashes. Pinball Fantasies works well but when I start a game, it crashes.

It's obvious that this emulator has to improve but I think it's a great step for dos emulation in PSP. Congratulations for CracyC ;)

Yeah, I can't start a new game on One Must Fall: 2097 because the enter key isn't recognized.

But I'm able to play games like the Commander Keen series and SkyRoads (though the music in this needs some help, but considering it's a beta release, it's rather good!).

Hi all. Dosbox on the PSP is fantastic ! I notice that CrazyC has just today posted an update to the program on forums.ps2dev.org that fixes the Enter key problem, but someone needs to convert it to an Eboot. Apart from the games, there are also some cool other DOS apps that I have running on the PSP now, like a Chinese character learning program - cool ! Cheers, Chris.

And have you tried the chrsitmas edition?

Heh, should have clarified, I was just talking about the sound, I too can't get past the menu screen (another game not recognizing theenter key?).

Nope I haven't tried that edition, though I've read about it.

Darn...it looks like it is suffering from the enter glitch. Were you able to get the gz file that CrazyC osted to open? I still can't...it is driving me crazy.

This emulator really needs a transparency keyboard as for the UAE psp porting.

In the meanwhile a clear guide to key binding is absolutely needed.

Btw, did that topic you linked to help you with the enter key issue?

Hmm, either OMF: 2097 doesn't work just yet, or it's taking a very long time to start up.

Is there any attempt being made at moving to Dosbox .65 or higher? Or is the plan to just beef up .60 for the psp. Dosbox .65 and up supports win 3.11 and I doubt that the slowdown would be too much. Once the speeds are up, 3.11 is working, and IR keyboard support is running, I will be able to leave my laptop at home and will officially be running mobile with a PSP only, win 3.1 had some good office suits which can still be made compatible with OpenOffice and MSOffice. I love this little scrap of hardware. 3.11 is possible if the Dosbox is updated, Warcraft sucks up just as much ram as Win3.11. Also, I heard people had Xcom working with this.. I wasn't able to pull it off... any tips?

U can copy the cd on the memstick and mount it in dosbox as a cd.
I tried HOMM1 too, but hadn't any luck with it :(

Ok I seem to have a problem with warcraft.
It will load. But if i have sound and music going it gives me a bus error just before the intro to the race you chose. Then if i turn off music i get a bus error just before the starting menu shows up. If i just have music it runs fine. So im guesing its effects related but for the life of me cant figure it out. i have tride the demo and the full game with the same result.
Have had this problem sence the first eboot. if you need more info i should be able to answer.
I am a child of dos after all. lol
Thank you ahead of time.:D

How would I go about doing this? Do I have to create an iso of the disc? Or can I just copy the files that are burned on the disc?

Biene_Maja

I copied the root of the cd in a dir named homm2 then i edited the dosbox.conf [autoexec] section as follows:

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c ms0:/psp/dosbox
mount d ms0:/psp/dosbox/dn151/homm2 -t cdrom
SYSOPT clock 333
c:
cd dn151\
dn.com

after that i run it from dn with heroes2.exe

SpacemanSpiff
June 19th, 2007, 21:18
so the homm2 directory has to go inside the dn151 folder. PSP:\dosbox\dn151\homm2 correct?
Damn, its gonna take forever to copy the CD over. This better be worth it!

Anyone having mouse issues ?
The mouse moves by itself, which is terribly annoying when playing a game that requires pinpoint accuracy...
Any help would be greatly appreciated

SpacemanSpiff
June 20th, 2007, 17:35
Its a flaw with the PSP's joystick. It has no deadzone and oftentimes gets pushed from the center on its own. Only thing you can really do about it in DosBox is to turn down mouse sensitivity in the dosbox.conf file.

That's too bad...
Another issue I am having with some games:
if a game is using a .bat file to launch, I cannot bind buttons to arrow keys. I tried with Elvira Mistress of Darkness & Dungeon Hack to no avail.
I tried 2 separate .bat files, one setting up buttons & launching the second bat file that launches the game.
I also tried 1 .bat file with the button bindings after the echo off.
Either way, the game does not recognize the bindings. I don't have any problems if the game is launched via an executable .exe.
Any ideas what is going on ? If it is possible to get these games to run with the bindings, please post your batch file.
Thanks,

Loic

I would need to see the contents of the batch file your trying to run, but in most cases the batch file was just used to start a dos extender which is not needed in dosbox.

Well, I'll give you the one for Dungeon Hack, the thing is it is impossible to launch the eecutables directly as everything is tied into the batch file. Here is the batch file for Dungeon Hack:

@echo off
INPUTMAP up a
INPUTMAP right y
INPUTMAP down v
INPUTMAP left f1
INPUTMAP triangle up
INPUTMAP square left
INPUTMAP cross down
INPUTMAP circle right
INPUTMAP start enter
INPUTMAP select esc
set F=0

checksys 56 640
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto EXIT

if exist savegame\settings.dat goto CHECKDEMO
md savegame

:CHECKDEMO
if NOT exist OPEN.RES goto CONTINUE
aesop open opening

:CONTINUE
aesop hack phase-one
set F=1
if ERRORLEVEL 3 goto CONTINUE
if ERRORLEVEL 2 goto CHECKDEMO
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto EXIT
cd savegame
..\maze %1 %2
cd ..
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto EXIT

aesop hack phase-two
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto EXIT
goto CONTINUE

:EXIT
set F=

Any clue on how to use key bindings with Dungeon Hack ?

jamotto
June 22nd, 2007, 05:04
Well, I downloaded the demo of Dungeon Hack and set it up just like you did and the key bindings worked for me. The only thing I had problems with was the time it took for it to register a key press, in some cases it took almost a minute after hitting the psp button before anything happened on screen.

The only real difference between the demo I played and your batch file is these two lines don't exist in the demo

checksys 56 640

if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto EXIT

checksys was used to make sure the computer was fast enough to run the game, if not it would exit. You can take these lines out as they are not needed now.

Still no dice with Dungeon Hack. I have the retail version of the game (still kept it after all these years) if that changes anything. At any rate, I have tried to remove the checksys & iferrorlevel lines to no avail. I guess I will have to wait for a different control scheme. Awesome emu otherwise.

Here is a basic template for bat files. This may help:

@ECHO OFF
INPUTMAP up <insert key>
INPUTMAP right <insert key>
INPUTMAP down <insert key>
INPUTMAP left <insert key>
INPUTMAP triangle <insert key>
INPUTMAP cross <insert key>
INPUTMAP circle <insert key>
INPUTMAP square <insert key>
INPUTMAP start <insert key>
INPUTMAP rtrigger <insert key>
INPUTMAP ltrigger <insert key>
INPUTMAP analog joystick
INPUTMAP select <insert key>
INPUTMAP exec <insert .exe, .com, or .bat file>

Hey, sorry about asking for help (sort of) in my first post, but has anyone managed to get Dark Sun: Shattered Lands running alright? I just tried, but the sound kind of lags and isn't very pleasing. On top of that, it doesn't seem to be very responsive; I move the analog stick and the cursor moves a couple seconds after, haha.

It might have been fixed with a patch, and I could just not know what the hell I'm doing =\. Still, help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!

I wanted to try this new version of DosBox, but unfortunately, I always get teh same damn error:

"Exit to error: Unhandled CPU opcode 0F at 000032FA"

I get this error when I try to load AlienBreed Tower Assault and I honestly have no idea what this great error message means ...

Anyone here that might be able to help me out?
Thx in advance ...

I'm sorry for bothering you but I can't get HOMM2 to run on my psp. I made a batch file that does run correctly, but when it tries to execute HOMM2 the response is: win32 req. Do I really need windows on my psp to play it? If so, how do I install it? Please, any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. If possible, could you send instructions to me via email? Thank you for your time. My email is: [email protected]

Mr. Sheng: You just got the wron executable of HoMM2. You are trying to run the win32 version in dosbox, but HoMM2 also has a DOS executable (maybe not in your version of HoMM2 tho).

okay, now I have a new problem. I have a dos version of HOMM2 and I linked a bat file to it. I try to run it and it responds with:

***command line help***

D0 - disable digital sound
M0 - disable MIDI music
R0 - disable redbook music
I0 - intro skipped

Example:
HEROES2D \R0 I0\
starts the DOS version of Heroes2 with rebook music disabled and intro skipped

When I try to execute the regular HEROES2.exe file it will run, but of course I can't play it without the input mapping. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. This is becoming quite frustrating.

Hello. I am having a problem with running this program. Here is what I have done so far.

I downloaded the file that was at the beginning of this thread. I copied the folder "dosbox" to the PSP folder, copied the "%__SCE__DOSBOX________" and "__SCE__DOSBOX________" folders to the PSP/GAME folder, and created .bat files using the template that was previously described in the noob how to guide. I put all the game folders into the "dosbox" folder, each with an individually made .bat file. The problem is, it won't start at all. I am running 3.71 M33 firmware. What should I do? Thanks.
