You may use one to improve the reception of the GPS unit, have a security camera setup, etc

Hmm i'm a wiring noob so i might fry my psp. And i can't buy a male to female usb extender cable here in the Netherlands, i will have to import it first (again, just like psp-290 :( )

I just made an extension cable tonight, and I gotta say it works great. When I first got my gps-290, it would never see more than 2-3 satellites. I tried for weeks and couldn't get it to lock on to anything. I just walked outside with my extension cable, and it immediately saw 8-9 sats and I got a lock right away. I went for a drive and it stayed locked for the entire 40 km's!

I used the following parts: (digikey part numbers)
MINI USB PLUG - H2955-ND
MINI USB RECEPT - H2960CT-ND

a terminal i ripped out of an old usb port
a spring loaded terminal pin used for in-system programming ('borrowed' from work ;))
an xbox extension cable

If you've got a broken xbox controller, the cable works great because its standard USB plus one yellow cable, so you don't need to run extra wires alongside.

If you do get these parts, be warned they are smt versions so the spacing on the pins is really small, you'll need a fine tip iron and some patience. Definitly worth it tho!

Great news. I'll buy one. Including shipping it's only 16 euros. I can live with that.

Better sleeping and having fun with my psp than strugglin hours and hours to order the spare parts from all over the world and another hours and hours trying to build the cable.

Also this pre-made cable is much stronger as the power cables are INSIDE the extension cable, not outside anymore.

Has anyone tried an alternate camera hooked up with the cable? I would be nice to set up a higher quality camera similar to using a holux gps reciever instead of psp290.

Naah, i only modded one of my PSP-300X cameras to enable Nightvision bu just taking off a lens and adding some Infra red Diodes :)

You should be able to upgrade the CCD sensor from a Sony mobile phone if youre good enough though, like if youre a mad scientist that has massive equipment for surface mounting and soldering stuff like CCD sensors

w00blyn got a question for you, im having trouble finding a mini usb cable in the uk that has the male and female ends that are needed for this DIY make.

Ive found a spring test pin but cant find a cable any where other than pc mobile in the states.

Im after a 2-2.5m extension cable, got any ideas to find one in UK??

Get them from Pc mobile :D
Add more to make a longer cable, you should be able to make a long cable out of 3* 1.5 meter cable to have 4,5 meters, cables longer than 5 meters could pose a problem :)
