3.40 OE-A pre-Install help asap (first timer)

Hey,

i just got a PSP with fw version 1.50 and want to play homebrew or ISOs of my memory stick, so i plan to update to 3.40 OE-A.
the problem is that i have a magicgate 4GB memory stick, which i got from ebay and might be fake.
Is it safe to update?
if not is there an alternative to safely play homebrew?

Just use a friends to update, updating with a fake memstick can lead to brickage. Homebrew shouldn't be a problem with it though.
