Illiminati Lumines exploit for all PSP versions, 1.00 - 3.50!

An exploit has been uncovered in Lumines (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-2pz-71-9f-77-2-49-en-15-lumines-84-j-70-11rr.html) - allowing unsigned code to be ran!


The All-Seeing Eye is watching you...

Following research in conjunction with Archaemic, Noobz are proud to present the first ever all-firmware exploit for the PSP. Based on Lumines, the "Illuminati" exploit is a user-mode exploit using a buffer overflow in the savedata file - similar to the GTA exploit.

That's right - if you've got a legal UMD copy of Lumines, then you can run homebrew on your PSP - whatever the firmware version. That includes v3.50! Right now, the only homebrew is the Hello World demo released below - but in future we intend to release a HEN and downgrader.

To make the exploit work:

* Check that you have an EU or US version of Lumines (ULES00043 or ULUS10002). Currently we don't have a version for the Japanese version, but we're working on it, as soon as we get hold of a Japanese UMD.
* Extract the contents of the 'MS_ROOT' folder from the ZIP file into the top-level of your memory stick. (HINT: If you wind up with an 'MS_ROOT' folder on the stick, you've done it wrong).
* Start the game, and as soon as it gets to the 'Press START' screen, press START. If you wait until the demo has started, the exploit may not work.
* The screen should go blank, and the exploit will start after a few moments. It doesn't do anything except look pretty at this stage - but feel free to enjoy the first homebrew on your v3.10 - v3.50 PSP Wink

UPDATE:

It seems that the Illuminati exploit doesn't work properly if your PSP is set to non-English settings. At a guess, it's something to do with unicode when displaying the profile name.

Anyway, if you are having problems, especially with the European Lumines, then try switching your PSP to 'English' settings.

One other note - Lumines sales on Amazon.com have gone up over 14,000% since yesterday!

Yeah... This rules. Lumines is MUCH easier to get one's hands on than the old version of GTA:LCS. Just about any store that carries PSP stuff would have a copy.

The main obstacle to getting downgraders and HENs and the like to work in the first place is just running unsigned code. Honestly, this is a HUGE chunk of the battle already.

When you're playing with fire, there's always the possibility of getting burned. If there is a downgrader made, it will have the same risks as every other downgrader.

HOWEVER, downgrader writers have gotten much better at making safeguards to do what they can to prevent unfortunate circumstances.

I'd even go so far as to advise waiting for a downgrader from Team noobs or C+D or someone reputable like that before trying anything else. It's NOT worth the risk to jump on the first shmuck who says they've built a new downgrader.

I'd do the same.... i remember way back last year around this time or in may when the 2.5-2.6 downgrader came out and it bricked every psp it was ran on. Then it got modified (i think by D-A) and it worked(used it on my 1st psp... it survived)... this is why I wait at least 12 hrs before using ANY downgrader (unless approved by trusted devs) to see what other people say about it (or to watch unsuspecting noobs to brick their psps b/sc they couldnt wait ahahah... jks). Downgraders now-a-days have become more secure and stabler. I could even argue that they are even better than sony's official updates(in safety and security... i feel more secure running a noobz generic downgrader than a sony official updater=P). Anyways, thanks once again to every1 involved in the production of this exploit and breakthrough :D :cool:

This is incredible. Another user mode exploit affecting PSP's all the way up to 3.50 firmware. Simply an amazing find and a lot of time probably went into analyzing different games to find this.

And although it is not certain, just the possibility of a downgrader for 3.50 is one of the most exciting developments happening in the homebrew scene right now.

Then there is 3.50 OE in the works from Dark_AleX so there is no doubt that the PSP homebrew community is at full swing once again. And that's the way we all love it.

This is even more of a surprise because it wasn't too long ago when we heard Fanjita would be taking a break from the scene. Now I know there is more to team Noobz than just Fanjita himself but the name Fanjita and Noobz goes hand in hand.

A huge thanks goes out to all who were involved in this discovery and all who will be working on utilizing this exploit further.

One big question I have about a downgrader using this exploit or downgrading a 3.10+ PSP is will there still likely be that issue where your PSP gets bricked if you try and upgrade to an official SONY firmware after downgrade? Not that I would ever upgrade to a strictly SONY firmware but it would be nice to know.

This could be great for many people and do what Noobz has always done best.... Open the door for more people to enjoy homebrew. Now I can try and order a silver-metallic PSP and not worry about it coming with 3.10+ firmware.

So long for now, Veskgar is off to GameStop to get my hands on the original Lumines UMD before someone else beats me to it. Now I wish I never sold the copy I had bought with my launch PSP.

Don't panic... get yourself a copy of that Lumines game, then just wait till the possible downgrader comes out, and sell your PSP to repair. Whatever the firmware you get it back with, it will be downgrade-able...

A exploit has been released. This means that very soon (probably within a few days), a downgrader for a psp with firmware 3.50 or below will be released.
To play snes and nes games, you need to downgrade, then upgrade to 3.40 OE-A, which you can download from www.dark-alex.org
