"Researchers are closing in on a means to detect previously undetectable stealthy malware (http://www.scmagazine.com.au/News/358265,research-detects-dangerous-malware-hiding-in-peripherals.aspx) that resides in peripherals like graphics and network cards. The malware was developed by the same researchers and targeted host runtime memory using direct memory access (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_memory_access) provided to hardware devices. They said the malware was a 'highly critical threat to system security and integrity (http://www.researchgate.net/publication/244484148_A_Primitive_for_Revealing_Stealthy_Perip heral-Based_Attacks_on_the_Computing_Platform's_Main_Mem ory/file/60b7d51d3ef23c9fe2.pdf)' and could not be detected by any operating system.
