Some people think wearable device users are wankers (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/the-world-according-to-tim-green-christ-no-it-s-wearable-tech/020283), while others are concerned about the safety risks (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/you-shall-not-glass-more-bans-for-google-s-digital-specs/021060)technologies like Google Glasses will pose.
That said, Berg Insight predicts shipments of the devices – comprising smart glasses, smart watches and fitness trackers – will reach 64 million in 2017.
The figure is a huge leap from 3.1 million in 2011 and 8.3 million in 2012, with the growth expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 50.6 per cent.
Fitness devices are dominating the market at the moment, but with Samsung introducing the Galaxy Gear (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/samsung-galaxy-gear-the-smartwatch-is-here-and-waiting-time-is-over/022298) and Apple working on the iWatch (http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/apple-iwatch-thought-to-suffer-hard-engineering-problems/021892), smart watches are set to take the lead in the next few years and integrate the functionality provided by the exercise accessories.
Johan Svanberg, senior analyst, Berg Insight, said: "Today’s devices need to evolve into something more than single purpose fitness trackers or external smartphone notification centres in order to be truly successful."
