HTC have announced the Gold HTC One, an 18-carat model of the phone produced to celebrate the MOBO Awards.
The handset will be given to the winner of the HTC-sponsored Best Newcomer category at the 18th anniversary MOBO Awards on October 19th in Glasgow.
HTC has said that the Gold HTC One is “very limited edition”, with only five of the smartphone in existence.
Created in partnership with the founder of Goldgenie, which previously announced a platinum, gold and diamond-studded iPhone 5S (http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/iphone-5s-offered-in-swarovski-crystal-studded-24-carat-gold-and-platinum/031933), Laban Roomes, the phone is valued at £2,750.
The collaboration marks the first time Goldgenie has set its Midas touch to an Android device.
The body of the special edition One is plated in 18-carat polished gold, with a laser-etched ‘MOBO 18’ logo on the back.
"The best artists have always been given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phone,” said Phil Blair, HTC President of EMEA.
“We wanted to celebrate that fact. The award winning HTC One is the gold standard in mobile design and innovation, so it was an obvious choice to make it even more special.
“We're sure the winning MOBO artist will love their unique phone and we will even be giving a lucky member of the general public the chance to get their hands on one soon too."
“MOBO turning 18 is a huge achievement and a special time for us,” said Kanya King MBE, founder of the MOBO Awards.
“The 18-carat Gold HTC One phone is a great addition to our coming of age celebrations and helps add MOBO glitz to proceedings.”
HTC has recently been rumoured to be gearing up for a launch of the HTC One Max, with invitations sent from HTC Hong Kong to journalists translating as: “One finger opens up a big view. You are invited to immerse in the sound with us.”
The handset is expected to have a bigger display, fingerprint scanner and BoomSound speakers. The product launch event – which will possibly reveal the One Max – will take place on October 16th in Hong Kong, followed by another launch in Taiwan on October 18th.
