the reason i brought up the yankees/red sox? yankees were up 3 games to 0... yet lost 4 games to 3... thats all. it can happen. just ask Buster Douglas...lol

da relic

I understand the point that you were making about unlikely things occurring, but it was completely within the realm of possibility to happen, and it did. think about it this way: It's like the Red Sox vs the Yankees, only the Red Sox players are all 3 years old. They may or may not be able to play baseball, but it's certainly guaranteed that they won't be able to play very well. The PSP, if it can emulate the Dreamcast, will not be able to emulate it well enough to merit writing the emulator in the first place. Dreamcast games can also be up to 1GB in size. You would need to buy a 2GB memory stick in order to store one game and the emulator, as the actual space available is always slightly less than the size listed on the label.

But, with any luck, the next generation of handhelds can do it, or you could try to build a portable Dreamcast (http://benheck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=974&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=portable+dreamcast&sid=085c9932337dcb2e05f84e0d44d03dea) yourself.

But, getting back on topic, Sougen should concentrate on getting Genesis emulation working perfectly before worrying about other Sega systems. That includes the Genesis add-ons...

Hello ALL!!!

Why does everyone always 'assume' that all the space on game discs is used? Usually it isn't...TRUST ME.

For the record there are countless games for the Dreamcast that fit very nicely on a CD; not that I or others out there no anything about that. Same as these UMD discs that can hold 1.8 Gb yet many games fit on 512 cards...Somewhat related; the PS3 games will be on disc that will be 'able' to hold 54 gigs of info (I think...) do you really believe that EVERY game will use anywhere close to that space?

-----------------------------------------------------

Anyway, 3 games with noticeable bugs...

Golden Axe: the blue magic potions don't show on screen

Desert Strike: stalls at mission briefing at the start of the game

Forgotten Worlds: SEGA screen and TITLE screen don't show up on screen BUT when you press start several times the game starts up fine.

Thank you so much for this emulator. The way it is now makes me very happy. I know you'll improve the interface and the 'crashing' very soon.

cheers

WOW the latest version of this EMU is a awesome. Took me a while to realise that SAVE STATES had been added LOL

I should really read those README's!

Most games work fine for me but I have a problem -

When exiting the EMU from the ROM selection screen the PSP locks up.

This EMU really needs an options screen that it brought up by pusshing the anoluge nub, and from there we should be able to do save states and exit the emu. Right now I know I'm going to push SAVE when I mean to hit LOAD at some point! lol

Awesome Emulator though, much better than DGEN, that one locks up on me and gives me corrupt games all the time.

One bug I've noticed is that when I play Warsong, the character sprites sometimes become disaligned with the backgrounds.

This is by far the best genesis emulator out there in my opinion. It runs incredibly well now that you can 333hz it.

Now, I'm no expert on coding emulators, but what does the probability of one baseball them beating another in the playoffs have to do with the capabilities of the PSP vs the hardware specs of the Dreamcast? The PSP is a beast in the hardware department, but not only does its hardware have to be more powerful than the Dreamcast, its hardware has to be miles ahead of the Dreamcast in order to be able to emulate the DC's hardware, unless it uses similar processors that can run the DC's code almost natively. (correct me if I'm wrong.)

An N64 or PS1 emulator is a little more likely, but it's doubtful that they will fare very well either. Besides, think of the strain on the already weak battery!

shut up, he was just trying to prove is point that anything can happen these days, don't take everything so literally.

I've just uploaded the latest version of PSPGenesis. There are a lot of changes in this version, so there may be some unforseen issues, but the major changes are:

- 6 button joystick support
- zip support (using Ruka's unziplib)
- fixed a bug in save states (current saves won't work - if you really,
really want your old save I could consider writing a converter... ).
- user definable controls
- optimized the sound code a bit (more games run faster now).
- games list is now sorted
- implemented new ui
- user skins support for ui
- return to current game support
- frameskip options (note, if you have manual frameskip and the
game cant keep up, the sound will obviously be jumpy if u dont
have auto frameskip on)
- vsync option
- multiple save slots per game
- experimental 50Hz conversion
- added 266Mhz CPU speed setting
- other miscellaneous fixes and features

If you're running a 1.50 psp, make sure you have all the new skin files in the proper directory.

(Screenshots and downloads can also be found here http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/pspgenesis.shtml )

Wow, just wow. You must have been working hard the past few days. I've been waiting for analog support, multiple save states, return to current game support, and a fix of the home button crash and you delivered all of that plus more in a single update. Thanks a lot man, this rocks.

Gave this a test this morning. The GUI is excellent, and ZIP support, 6 buttons, game saves all seem to be working great.

I ran into a problem with Earthworm Jim 1 though.

When you hold jump in Earthworm Jim, he doesn't do a full jump. It's almost like autofire is switched on and he keeps doing short jumps.

I really don't want to seem ungrateful, especially because this is probably the most solid emulator out there, but I know myself and my homebrew colleagues have probably invested 10 hours or so already on our RPGs of choice - myself playing Shining Force II. I'd love to upgrade to .17, but can't afford to lose my progress. Do you think we could please get the savegame converter?

Thanks for the offer wraggster, but I don't want to make any money from this project. I just hope people get to enjoy the old games they used to play :)

And JJB0070, I can understand how you feel if you lost 10 hours of gameplay. So if you can send me your save game for testing (I don't have any old savegames around), I'll get round to doing a converter in around a week'ish or so.

Sougen the menu and everything looks great. But with this version of the emu I have the same problem as asphalter with all my games. Maybe I can change settings or something to fix this? Plus it lags alot when I press buttons. Version 17 is not stable. Im gonna stick with 16 until all of these problems are fixed. But I really do love the new menu thing.

I've created a classic Mega Drive skin for this release, let me know what you think, I may just release a few more :)

http://www.megadrivearchive.com/classicmegaskin.zip

There does appear to be a few problems with this release on my 1.50 psp, the controls are a little speradic, and in Afterburner the guns fire constantly. I also appear to be having issues with the emu running to fast even when messing with the frameskip options.

This is a wonderful little emulator though and is currently my favorite on the PSP!

Great job!

Sougen, I have to say... AWESOME WORK MAN! The zip support has saved me 8MBs of memory stick ^^. And that's allot for me and my 32MB stick, lol.
I love the new UI, it looks great, and zipped games load quickly. The savestates seem to work fine.

However, I've noticed that you haven't yet fixed the tranparency problem. Transparency seems to only work if it is implemented over the entire screen. The selectable controls are great, except that A and X, are set by default to use Triangle as their input. This could probably cause some problems and needs to be fixed. Unfortunatly, I dont think that SRAM works just yet.

I have a problem with the analog stick being used for movement. Unless you press the joystick almost PERFECTLY right, then you get on of the diagonals. this is true for the other directions im sure, but i mostly have a problem with pressing right, maybe you could fix this by letting a tiny bit of the "up" input that is for the diagonal, still be "right". you probably dont get this at all, lol. But its a bit of a problem with this analog stick.

Otherwise, it's GREAT sougen ^^. thanks so much for this great release.

Well, all of my bugs have already been reported by other users, so I'll just add a suggestion- Maybe an FPS Limiter toggle? So that the speed of the games tops out at 60 FPS, like in the emulator ePSXe on the PC? It would definately fix any speed problems if it could be done.

sexy looking skin ddr lord. hey am i the only one who cannot run sonic 3 & sonic and knuckles? well, because i cant run it, i want to know if it can make saves to the rom. if any of you remember, in sonic 3 it would save your progress on the rom in a profile. and when you beat the game you can come back and play any level you want and other shit like that

Xenepp

Nice skins DDRlord! I sense many more to come! ;)

I fixed the fps prob, not sure how though? I set frameskip to auto, set 50hz emulation on, vsync on... and it works ok.... I think it's really rom-rom diffrences.

Like with the autofire toggle on some buttons on some games. Here's a few games with sport the problem:

Alien 3 - Direction buttons
Gunstar Heroes - Directional and "A" doesn't work?
Mortal Kombat II - Directional buttons

I'll go through what I have and post results here, it's about 40% I've found to have the problem, I thought it was just 6 button games but apparently not.

Wouldn't have anything to do with the mode button not being present would it?

I was just playing Ristar, and the music just went...wierd, like crackaling and as if it were reading random bits of the MIDI but the melody was still intact, I went back to the UI and then back into the game, and it was fine.
Just reporting a bug. ^^

EDIT:
I think it's more of a crackaling effect, I have no clue what would cause this though. I was playing Ristar again, and it happened when I was swinging on the poles that make Ristar fly and be invicible. It happened after I did that, and then went away and i tried the pole again and i think it came back, maybe its because of certian sound effects?

The new interface is fantastic, and the option to choose your own frameskip rate is a welcome one. Still, I wish they'd speed this up! When Genesis games run at full speed on this emulator, it'll be practically perfect.

I think I found the problem with the button-rapid fire thing. It's a bug with the 6 button layout. Turn off that feature and reload the game (you have to reload it), and those games should work.
I guess maybe there was a purpose for that mode button on my 6-button Genesis controller after all. However, I never actually used it (never knew if it actually worked). A bug in the 6-button programming, perhaps?
I don't play any 6-button games, so I don't know if they're affected. do any of them have the rapid-fire problem?

In the .zip there's a file called system.fnt. This needs to go into the psp genesis directory on your psp without the '%'. The xploit tool will not copy this file, you need to add it yourself.

That's your problem ;)

This sound's like your only exporting the EBOOT file, you also need to put the system file along with the 3 bmp files on the mem stick for the menu to work

Shiaoran, Ristar is awesome, I know =).
Anyway, your ROM for S3&K must be corrupt. The great thing about emulation on the PSP, over the PC, is that everyone has the same specs, so there wont be differnet compatability for different users... unless sony ups the specs like it did with the PS2. (I hope not) So, you probably just need to find a different dump of the ROM, as I can get S3&K to work fine. Goodluck

The reason I'm on this forum is because of a quick google search for "PSP Genesis" which brought be directly to this topic. I couldn't be happier with what I found, this emulator alone makes the PSP worth every cent that I payed for it. If I knew there were people like you working on homebrew, than I would have purchased a PSP months ago. I was lucky to get a 1.5 just in time. Thank you so much, I can't wait for your future releases.

Okay, first off, I'd like to pay my respects to Sougen fro enabling me to be able to play all these genesis games on my PSP. You really brought me to touch with my childhood and all the games I grew up with. You did an excellent job.

Now, I do have a few bugs and maybe some help with others. Well, first thing that I have problems with, especially with games like Toy Story and Phantasy Star 4 is that when I try to boot the rom, it tells me that I need an NTSC system to run it. Is there any way that I can get these roms to work on my PSP?

I have also read posts about buttons autofiring when they aren't supose to. Now, I know that this is due to the 6-button support. If it is turned on when u boot up a game, it will enable an auto-fire for some reason. Now, if you change the controller to a 6-button controller in a game, (such as in MK2 or MK3), the autofire will not be active. I don't know why this does this, but it works. As for other games that don't support 6-button, simply turn off 6-button and reload the rom. You shouldn't get the autofire anymore.

Hope this helped anyone and hope someone can help me. Thanks!

*edit* Oh, I almost forgot. It may sound kinda childish, but my copy of Mickey Mouse: Great Circus Mystery doesn't work. I really wish I could play this game, cause it used to be one of my favorites. Can anyone see if they can get this rom to work for me? I'd really appreciate it.

Also, the skins are coming along really nicely! I'd love to see more!*edit*

well i can tell you, i dont have any screenshots but all you do is put your roms in: psp/games/gens thats it for me anyway.

what format are your roms in? mine are .smc format. hope this helps a bit.

also i really dont think it matters where you put the roms hell you could put them in another smulator folder and still search to it. if they arent showing up try making sure they are in the folder via link cable. dissconnect it and reconnect the connection and confirm they are there.

unfortunately no. im sorry man i wish you could did you update to 2.0? or is yours a 1.51 or 1.52 i heard those versions dont work with homebrew or emulations.

also as a side note are you saying you can load the emulator itsself up on the version you have?

G00NIES1985

bbut then the games do not work.

trew01
July 28th, 2005, 23:39
ok lol im confused the game tab shows up and can you click on it to where it loads the emulator?
it should load up like a normal umd. then come up with the interface for the emulator that allows you to select the rom to load up.
if it gives you an error before the emulator loads up then yeah your screwed.
what version is on your psp?

Good god why are people like this?!?!?!?

There is NO way currently to play emulators on 1.51 / 1.52 / 2.0 firmwares for the PSP

No one knows when they will be able to, but from what I've read it's going to be a pain in the A$$ - so stop asking! Believe me, if and when they do crack it in some form you'll know because it will be pretty major news on this site and others...

And for the guy who can't get Mickey Mouse to play...try a different rom from a different region and/or source...good luck

To Sougen: Thanks for this emulator; this is and was my favorite system. I always wanted the Nomad but this is even better!!! Any future improvements will only build on this near perfect program...except for the fact the magic potions don't show up in Golden Axe....

Just another small update:

- Automatic support for loading old save states (untested since I don't have any old save states around)
- Option to change the sound quality. (44100 is not recommended because it needs a lot of processing power to emulate the ym2612 chip at that frequency), but it's there if you really want it.

Just some info on the 6-button setting. You should only turn it on for games that support it. A lot of games don't handle the 6-button controller properly (which is why there is a 'Mode' button on a real controller that you hold down when you power up the megadrive). I'll have a look at seeing if this can be autodetected.

Just so people won't be guessing/asking later on, I am currently really busy, so there won't be much releases for a while.

(Screenshots and Download of latest release can also be found here --> http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/pspgenesis.shtml )

again i really appriciate all the people who put their free time into these emulators and homebrews. i cant wait to see what will happen 1 year from now with psp. so far its only been 5 or 6 months since psp came out here and we already have a ton to mess with on it.

sougen, you did a fantastic job of emulating the ym2612 chip at a frequincy of 44100. IT really sounds great, and really doesn't slow down the emulator that much. Hopefully after you optimize all the code then it'll run smoothly on the frequincy, I really love it =D. and thanks again for another fantastic update! ^o^

Absolutely amazing. PSP Genesis is the main reason I'll never upgrade beyond v1.50 firmware (I'll buy another psp if need be). Can't beat a bit of Streets of Rage when your out and about.

Hey i was just wondering in your next update if you could put the button to go back to the roms list on something like left analog instead of select because in some games like lost vikings you need the six button controls and you cant sekect items and use them at the same time you need the select button and you cant change it in controls

Thanks

Romshark
August 2nd, 2005, 21:23
To my knowledge, the Sega Genesis never had a select button. Just a start button, a d-pad, 3 or 6 action buttons, and maybe a mode button. I don't know how Lost Vikings could need a button that doesn't exist.

I have been testing many games on .13 through .18c and I have noticed considerable improvements in framerate, sound quality, features (GUI, save states and zip support especially), and even some graphics fixes (Strider and Lightening Force work now). However the following games, all shmups, are still not working:

Gaiares - though I seem to recall it working in a previous version... Loads, music plays, no text is visible and no options are selectable.

Gley Lancer - Loads, music plays, can select game, then when first stage starts it Blue Screens, in .15 it showed memory addresses instead of BS.

Insector X - hangs after SEGA logo.

unfortunately i can't get dgen .80 to stop crashing in the menu, so i can't test the games...

UPDATE: dgen .70 plays Gaiares and Gley Lancer without problems... Ran out of room on the memory card to fit Insector X since dgen doesn't have zip support yet :( For some reason I keep thinking that these games ran in an earlier version of PSPGenesis...

Sougen I know there's time between releases but if I may chime in on this excellent release:

Button Config. Currently you are choosing from a pre-set array of choices for buttons. Perhaps implementing the "oft-used" RIN code for button selection would be better, since it allows more "user-defined" key-combos and whatnot.

But I'm playing NHL 94 just fine, although there's still choppiness when organ music plays (YM chip), but it's not as choppy as before so I can still play.

Though SRAM saving for that game is currently messed up. I forget if EA used a special chip for it or something; gotta look that up. Save states are fine though.

Thanks again

I've opted to stay with v0.17 since with v0.18c, if you use frameskip to speed the game up, the music can't keep up. It's fine in v0.17.

Also a question Sougen. Did you do anything special to get the volume of your Genesis so high? I love how this emu is almost double the volume of other emus. Is there anyway you could share how you did it so we can get this for other emus on other systems? I'd love to have the boost for SNES as well.

just for you guys to know, since v17 (dunno why) brazilian games work (but sometimes the sound [bgm/sfx] is doubled and it makes the game run slow)

the forum is too quiet... that's strange...

i would like to ask for game genie support, or a value editor, if possible...

is there any pc emulator that supports the savestate format of PSPGenesis?
if there's one (or many), I could load the rom and the savestate in the pc, put the gamegenie codes(that don't need to be working to make effect [need to be on: health, time stop, etc][don't need to be on: money, score, items...]), savestate in the pc, put it in the MSDUO and play in PSP ^^

Paulmolive, that is the one I'm talking about (sorry for any confusion/miscommunication). Yeah, I'm using a Sonic 3 & Knuckles rom, and whenever I quit, go back to the game selector menu, choose a different game, then go back to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the game isn't saved automatically; that's what I'm talking about. The fact that it is not saving automatically, w/o me having to quick save, etc. I just figured if that was something that was occuring w/ everyone who was using that game.

Did not overuse the processor or battery life. No crashes whatsoever.

I love PSP GENESIS, its one of the better running emu's out

up there with NEsterJ

anyways, DGEN just came out with their new emu and it has the cheat enabler included in it

Im wondering if Sougen can incorporate this in PSP GENESIS.

Thats all it really needs

WITH MUCH GRATITUDE

Sougen, your SG MD emu has been #1 for me as far as the balance between speed and compatibility and I commend you for your awesome work. :)

Just one little "minor" detail that I'm sure your aware of - ^^

I think (not sure cause I don't code) their called "raster efects"

Like in Castlevania Bloodlines title screen there should be this mosaic like fade in to the title but it isn't there so I'm guessing this isn't implemented?

it's REALLY needed in a later part of the game where a trap that kills you in two hits uses these effects that are "hidden" ^^

Do you plan to add in a later release? where do i donate? ^^

Dragon's Fury - WORKING
Dynamite Headdy - WORKING
Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion - Some minor sound issues (Mickey's jumping noise for example)
Revenge of Shinobi - WORKING
Road Rash - Road is bright blue instead of black
Road Rash II - Road is bright blue instead of black
Speedball 2 Brutal Deluxe - Runs too fast, causing chipmunk effect with the sampled sound (haven't tried forcing to 50Hz though)
Strider - Problems with left and right controls causing sprite to flicker and move very slowly

Any fast scrolling games have a bit of a problem with the frame rate (Shinobi III, Sonic etc.) , but I guess these are just problems to be expected running this on a relatively low-spec machine. What you've achieved already is simply amazing.

Hate to ask, but would 32X support be possible? Neogenesis (Xbox) is probably the best emulator I've seen on any system - perhaps some of the ccode from that would be useful? Just a thought...

Is there any Genesis emulator which runs RoadRash correctly ? (i don't have a PSP yet, but a friend told me RoadRash is buggy, surely because there is no switch between "C" or "ASM" core)

If anybody can make RoadRash works could you tell me how much fps you get and if you must raise the frameskip to play ?

Thank you a lot

I'm playing WWF Royal Rumble which requires it, and when I have it turned on and configured right, the shoulders buttons look like they are set to move up and down. I'm made sure in the configure area that they are set to Y and Z, but that still doesn't work. ANy help>?

Is there a way to change regions in the latest version? I'd really like to play Phantasy Star IV or Beyond Oasis in English

Update: I found versions of these games that are altered to work on Japanese systems (and PSP genesis), however I discovered a game that doesn't work. Ys III. Has anyone gotten Ys III to work in PSP Genesis? For me after the sega logo the screen remains black (although I can still hear the music)

The good news is I solved the region problem. PSP Genesis is probably what I use the most on my PSP.

There is one problem with one game I found. The status bar on the bottom of Rolling Thunder 2 is all blue for some reason, making it useless. Other then this I've had no major issues.

Personally for me I feel that DGEN is already ahead of PSPGenesis. Most of the games I play run faster and the sound is more accurate. Granted I still have some games that run in PSPGenesis better like Contra Hardcorps and a few others. For me this is already ahead. Now I would love to see PSPGenesis get updated and get even better than it already is. Two kick ass Genesis/Megadrive emulators would be very sweet. Wait we do have two kick ass Genesis/Megadrive emulators.

Why does these sega genesis game runs not so smooth in PSP, I mean PSP's sys spec is way superior than the engine back then, and also PSPGBA emulator runs the GBA games quite slow, why is that?
Compared to the highly powered engine games like GTA:LCS, it runs smooth, then why can't GBA games run fast and not lag?

Kaiser
December 23rd, 2005, 10:23
Emulation is a hell of a lot different then a normal game. Takes much more power as the PSP is pretending to be something its not, in laymen's terms. Don't ask these questions in this thread either! This thread is to discuss Sougen's great emulator and nothing else.

gamerfotheuk

Why can't those tinkerers out there figure out a way to convert those roms as a PSP direct game, so it does not require an emulator to run, thus speed will be at full power running at 222 mhz.

Ditto.

This is what I've done.

- [MemoryStick]:\PSP\GAME\PSPGenesis\*
*EBOOT.PBP
*menuload.bmp
*menumain.bmp
*menutabs.bmp
*Readme.txt
*system.fnt
*S3K.BIN

PSPGenesis shows on my PSP, but when I go on start:-

'This game cannot be started. The data is corrupted.'

EDIT: I've also tried: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=6432

This also doesn't make it work. That update, it says 'it doesn't need updating'. So it's already 2.00

That TIF file that goes into the folder 'PHOTO' will NOT go on my PSP when it contains a Trojan virus.

No matter what I go on my PSP it just says: 'This game cannot be started. The data is corrupted.'

You got to be kidding me. You realize making a port of a trademarked game is illegal. Your taking some one elses property and converting it to run on a different format. Its legal for games such as DOOM and QUAKE because ID software is a nice company and they make a lot of their older material into shareware which means anyone can screw around with legally.

It runs fine on Fanjita's eboot loader for v2.0. I have it set up on my 2.0 right now. Dgen however doesn't run on v2.0 so if you want to play Genesis games on a 2.0 now only this will work. It runs just as good as Dgen (in my opinion anyway).

This project/homebrew/emulator what ever it is, has been unstickied. It has been unstickied because it is either an old release or has not seen an update in ages and is simply taking up space being stickied on the first page.

If the creator has a new update please post the new update in our submit news section or if you have already been granted the power post it directly in the PSP news section. Hell you can even post it in here and we'll re-sticky it because it will be considered an on-going/updated project.

Thanks

Has anyone here had any "sensitivity" problems with the d-pad when playing their Genesis roms? I've tried so far Sonic 2 and Puyo Puyo. I find that the d-pad is way too sensitive, and won't let me put Sonic in his crouch position (he'll crouch and stand several times a second, even tho I'm only holding the down key.)

Besides that, I've had no other problems running this emulator. Very smooth work! Smooth...but sensitive.
