It came a bit by surprise when Sony's new Slim & Lite PSP™ model hit retail shops in Hong Kong yesterday (August 30th), about two weeks prior to the official Japanese launch. Currently only available through selected local Sony partnershops, we picked up one unit, along with a Component/AV Cable for photo taking purposes.

Just as the name already implies, the new PSP-2000 model is slightly slimmer & lighter compared to the original PSP™, released almost three years back by now. More precisely and as advertised, the new PSP™ is 33% lighter (reduced to 189 grams from 280 grams) and 19% slimmer. Among other things, those figures result into the use of a lighter battery (with 1200mAh instead of 1800mAh capacity) and a slightly different UMD™ drive.

Speaking about the UMD™ drive, one may find it a bit confusing on how to insert the disc when using the first time. The disc drive no longer has a metallic tray, you just pop in the disc and close the lid. As long as you manage to realize which way the UMD™ has to be inserted, it's still a safe and easy task to do though.

Apart from the size and weight reduction, the most significant new feature is surely the AV-Out port. By connecting an Audio/Video Cable (sold separately and available as standard RCA, S-Video and Component variations), you can finally play your PSP™ games or watch UMD™ movies on your television screen. A feature that surely many have missed when purchasing the original PSP™ model.

The redesign further led to a number of minor changes, including relocation and abolishment of certain parts (i.e. the speakers have moved up, while a DC connector has been removed completely). As a result, a variety of (mostly third party manufactured) accessories will no longer be compatible with the PSP-2000 model consoles.

Finding some final words, the Slim & Lite PSP™ is a solid and worthy successor. If you don't own a PSP™ yet, feel convinced by any of the new features or simply like to own new gadgets, then this will be the right choice for you. However, if you just recently spent money on the original PSP™ and use it casually only, then we recommend you to consider carefully as the PSP™ Slim & Lite won't offer that much more.

"while a DC connector has been removed completely" DC connector? they can't mean the dc power connector, i can see it in the in the pictures and they couldn't because then you couldn't charge it. what else does DC stand for? i know the interface port next to the headphone jack has been changed and i know they removed IR, but what are they talking about?

If you kept up on PSP Slim and Lite, you'd know that it now charges through the mini-USB.

Oh yea! :) I really want the PSP-Slim cause of the TV connectivity, would be so super great. Plug it in your TV and watch movies and play games etc etc, great for parties, just get the PSP-Slim up front and play with your friends....or maybe listen to music. I hope there will be some kind of offer so you can change your old PSP for PSP-SLim and then pay less money, but i wont get it if it isnt hacked. An unmodified PSP i s not that fun.. :D

and if you payed better attention you would know that charging through the usb is an option and the slim still has the dc connector. however from this picture it does appear they got rid of the little metal contact tabs that are next to the original psp charge port. [sorry best picture i could find on short notice]

I never said that it didn't charge through the DC, the article said it. I was talking about the USB option, so you didn't need to go out of your way to prove it. :P
If I sounded rude, I'm sorry.;)

My main motivation to get the new PSP is the fact that it's new , the features aren't that impressive TBH.

my psp feels like a ugly overweight elderly person.

i'm sorry if i sounded like i took it like that. apology accepted. I noticed that you can charge via usb, but i'm still no closer to understanding what they meant when they said dc connector was removed.

sounds crap, flimsy UMD lid and a battery that is considerably smaller (shorter battery life) than the already bad battery life.
and the tv out thing is pretty bad for anything other than photos due to the resolution used by the psp being smaller than even regular TV's!

no thanks ill stick to the old model.

I want to get one of these new psp for one reason only, the extra 32 mb of ram. Hopefully a few homebrew developers will take advantage of this and make the option for newer psps to utilize the extra ram in their games or emulators. (Daedalus 64 and Quake 2 :D)

If the new ones get hacked soon I might try to sell my old psp on craigslist to buy a new one.

The Slim PSP will be harder to crack because it has a TA-085 Motherboard.

In reaction.

It doesn't seem the kind of overhaul that the DS lite has.

But on the other hand, my DS has gathered dust because of the PSP's homebrew and multi-functional uses...

The psp slim, when hacked will become my portable of choice...

It looks very, very nice... And im sorry for that hodad earlier... The psp slim vid out has options for interlace or progressive... That makes it better than you current dvd player... Dumbass.

- Mind you, with the new chipsets comming in the next months, I expect sony to get powerful, and smaller.

haha.

Anyone think they released in hong kong early so they can sue more import companies???

the battery life isn't shorter, the battery it self has a lower mAh, but the psp itself uses less powe. from what they say it is suppose to have the same battery life. granted people complained about the old battery life, but i never realy hated it. [my nyko theater experience provides a nice backup]

plus they are suppose to make it so you can use your older, higher mAh rated batteries with the use of an optional battery cover to accomidate the bigger battery.

also, go read some reviews about the video out, alot of sites are saying it isn't half bad. not as good as dvd, but what did you expect? the only complaint i've seen is in how games don't fill the screen on bigg hd tv's

oh and dont want to be a smart-ass but the power cable into a psp is an AC not DC, to the peepz arguin at the start of this thread. :D

Stupid question, but these HK PSPs will work well with American/Japanese games, correct? I don't want to spend ~$230 if it can't for some reason.
