Putting together that feature becomes a little tricky when, having sent a flurry of emails to independent developers, not one of the studios we contacted had actually bought a PS4 or Xbox One.Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles might well have enjoyed record-breaking launches, but indie interest – certainly among the developers we asked – seems to lie elsewhere right now. For Playdead’s Jeppe Carlsen, Wii U, with a new Mario in tow, is currently the fresher and more innovative console; Ustwo’s Dan Gray bought a Vita instead of a new home console last week; The Astronauts’ Adrian Chmielarz believes neither offer anything that can’t be done on PC already and Size Five Games’ Dan Marshall is still waiting for one or the other to truly dazzle him. Simogo’s Simon Flesser, meanwhile, says that “they don’t seem to do much that most of my plastic boxes at home can’t do already.”These responses can’t speak for the entire indie community, of course, but their common apathy is still a little surprising, given how hard each platform holder has been trying to convince indies of these new consoles’ importance. “I am not really interested in any of the launch titles,” says Playdead’s Jeppe Carlsen. “At the end of this generation, the software really started lacking in quality on both consoles (except for The Last Of Us), but I am pretty excited about what is to come, and expect both new consoles to provide fantastic content in a year or two. I am happy my money was spent buying great Nintendo titles instead.”
