PSP Guide Library V2
This guide is on-going and will be constantly updated (at least to the best of my ability). Feel free to ask any PSP related question in this thread.
I originally created a guide back In August of 2005 called the "Running Homebrew and Emulation FAQ". It went through many changes and over the months evolved into a sort of guide library which spanned dozens of posts. Anywho, this is a new version of it which will contain not only guides by F34R and myself but will contain any guide PSP users here at dcemu want to contribute. My mission is to create the most comprihensive library compiled by multiple users which will cover everything from the most basic homebrew installation to the more advanced coding aspect of this community. Hopefully in due time things will start to pick up. If you want a link in this sticky just post here and ASK
Before you start your way into PSP homebrew goodness your going to want to know what firmware you have. Your firmware is extremely important in determining the method of installing firmware and the amount you can actually run.
How do I know which firmware version I have?
Turn on your PSP without a UMD in it and then go to settings. Then go down to where it says System settings and hit X. Then go down until you reach system information and hit X. It should come up with information about your MAC Address, System Software and your chosen Nickname. After you find out what firmware you have I'd reccomend you look through the many great guides the members and coders of DCemu have wrote.

I've just downloaded Beats of Rage v0.8, everyone's been saying it works great. I can't get it to play, though, because it keeps saying there is a fixed hard path to psp/game in the code. I saw in one of the other forums that someone else found that problem but fixed it by changing the config settings. Something about ignorefixedpath=Y. Can you tell me what that's all about, and how I can do that to fix this problem?

in reply to darcy1985 ::
Hi, in order to have homebrew on your 2.1 psp, your gonna have to have Grand Theft Auto for psp. Use that and, download the eboot loader for 2.1.
The reason for this is GTA alows (for some reason) some unmanaged code in there save files. So to my knowledge(i have no experience exept my freinds psp), the loader is just a save file along with some other files needed.
I hope i helped you out.

Thats usually the most common problem upon starting coding. Try doing what the part I bolded says. That should solve the problem.
The first step is to install CYGWIN. You can download the install file from the CYGWIN website here. After it has finished downloading, open up the executable. You will see a splash screen; click next. Now you will be asked what you want to do. Select the default option of "Install from Internet," and hit the next button. Now you will be prompted where you want to install CYGWIN. Change the install directory to "C:/cygwin" if it is not set as such already (where C: is your local hard drive). Leave the other options set to their defaults and hit next. Now you will be asked where you want to save the installation files. What you select here doesn't really matter, but I suggest putting them someplace where you will be able to find them and delete them after the installation is complete. Once you have selected a suitable location, click next. The next screen will ask about your network settings, if you don't use a proxy (or don't know what a proxy is), just click next on this screen. If it doesn't work, go back and try letting it use Internet Explorer's settings. Now you should be presented with a list of servers to download the installation files from. Any one of these will do, so select one, and then click on next. Now it will download the package list, this could take a few minutes, depending on your connection speed. Once it is done, scroll down to "devel" and click on where it says "default" so that it becomes "install." Then scroll down to "web," click the "+" next to it, scroll down and set "wget" to "install."

You check that off when installing cygwin. Your going to have to reinstall cygwin and check it off when you get to it there.

Hey man we here at dcemu support any coding from the simple programs to the complicated emulators and OSS Shells. I'll personally deal with anyone who insults a coders work. Its fine to dislike a program but to insult the author is considered a crime here. Good luck with your coding! :)

In the first lesson I got an error in compiling, i think its because it says to include pspkernal.h and pspdebug.h and i cant find them.
And if its them do i modify the code to say:
#include "pspkernal.h"
#include "pspdebug.h"
Can you type out how the code is supposed to look when its completed
So we can compare our scripts to the correct one for error correction please

Thanks!
Installing the eboot loader is pretty easy these days as Fanjita has made a simple installer program. Back in the early days of the loader you had to place many weird files in many weird locations.
http://fanjita.org/
check through that site to download the needed file. Please remember you can only play homebrew on v2.01 if you have GTA for PSP. As it has an exploit in it which is the only way people can currently get unsigned code through. You can get all the homebrew programs you need from ...

That information should get you started if you need any more help feel free to post a reply in this thread and I'll be on it ASAP :D

Hmm charge fully and start from stcratch then follow the guide carefuly. Remember to give the exploit sufficient time to trick your PSP. Do not reset your PSP quickly after the photo exploit is used.
I fully charged it and tried it again, the same thing happened. When you say give the photo exploit time that kinda confuses me because when I select photos in my psp browser it freezes and turns off, I thought that was the exploit. Nevertheless the same thing happens, no new file in my memory stick root folder and the update is right there in my psp browser under games, but when I try to use it the psp tells me there is no need to upgrade.

Its odd that it shuts off automatically, it should just stay at the messed up numbers. When you get to that screen your supposed to leave it own for about 15-20 seconds. I don't know what you can do if it doesn't even let you stay on that screen.:(

Next I typed ./toolchain.sh and it came up with:
ERROR: Please make sure you have 'automake' installed.
What do I do, I'm really excited about starting to program for the psp but I need to at least get every thing set up >.<
Any help is much appreciated.
EDIT: I just reinstalled cygwin and it fixed it, I can't wait to start :D
My guess is you made a mistake when installing Cygwin
The first step is to install CYGWIN. You can download the install file from the CYGWIN website here .

Hmm did you copy the art files onto your MS and as well as the eboots? I've seen this type of thing happen on many different emulators when people only put the eboots in but forget to copy the other files needed as well.
PM me if your still having trouble.

Hey this is a dumb question I know... but I cant seem to figure out how to save a file in Windows XP without an extension for the makefile. I Usta kinda know C++, so I have Dev-C++ and got cygwin and the toolchain header things. I continuously save my make file as a .txt and when I type make in cygwin it fails...
Help me please?
Thx and the tutorials are very well written
EDIT: so orginally this was my problme now it found out a way to make my computer recognise a "name." as a file extension, but it says that
make: psp-config:command not found
makefile:12: /lib/build.mk: no such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target '/lib/build.mak'. Stop.
did i set up the toolchain wrong? :/
I am confused, just when I thought I had it all figured out...

For neogeo the bios go in the roms folder with the roms don't unzzip eather of the files. For mame4all the neo bios you unzzip and put inside the roms that need it. Thats neogeo or SNK. hope that helps:o

Hey I started the new updates to my guide... dang i think theres a lot that needs to be changed.
I am still catching up on the Genesis Emus.
I tried to make the lists smaller but it did not work.
I will keep plugging away. Things are starting to clean up, I added the Downgrader Guides to it.
I am next going to ad a link to the only Mac Program for Homebrew installs I have found.
Catch ya later!

If you found one you'd be a VERY lucky man, I got mine in november 05 and it was a 1.52.
Your best bet would be ebay or online stores charging extra for old stock/downgraded new factory shipped 1.52->2.6 units.
EDIT: If you can find any unit with 2.6 or lower that doesnt have the dreaded TA-082 motherboard you can downgrade obviously.

System Settings - System Information shows your Firmware
To see whether or not you have a TA-082 model open your UMD slot and search for IC1003 (http://www.psp-faq.de/images/ta-082-check_1.jpg).

Hello, these tutorials are great. However, how do I turn assembly files into an eboot? Also how do I program graphics in assembly on the psp?
Thanks for the tutorials.

Hello, I just bought a PSP for my wife, and I'm looking to see what we can do with it. I have modded other consoles in the past, and I came here looking to learn about the PSP scene.
Most of the guides are fairly old, and I'm seeing some conflicting information regarding the 2.8 firmware (which we have) and was looking for some info.
Is there a fairly safe downgrader for 2.8, or should we upgrade and then downgrade?
It looks like there are programs called eLoaders that will boot (some) homebrew while not forcing you to change your firmware. This is the conflicting part. I've heard claims that there is a 2.8 capable eLoader, but the eLoader threads seem to suggest they only support 2.71 so far, but those were also old posts. Is there a 2.8 eLoader yet, and if not, does anyone expect there to be one soon?
I notice that there are also OE custom firmwares. What purpose do these serve exactly?
Thanks!

Hi i'm new to the psp scene. I just bought my psp in North America because I couldn't seem to get one for love nor money in scotland. Anywho I updated to 2.71 version.
My first question is:
Is there anyway for me to get around region encoding so that I can buy games here that will work on a North American PSP?
My Second Question:
Do you recommend any custom firmware and can you direct me to a download site for said firmware and an install guide?
Thanks in Advance
