How do I run homebrew on custom firmware

I've just installed 3.71 custom firmware on my PSP but can't run any homebrew. I downloaded DGEN and put it into the Game150 folder and ran it but it comes up with an error. I've tried both versions. Am I doing anything wrong.

This is more than likely to just be a name changer program that makes your system settings say '3.71CF' or something. What firmware were you on before you updated?

I downgraded to 1.5 then went to 2.5 or something then to 3.71. It is running properly but I can't seem to run emulators and can't find a tutorial on running homebrew on the custom Firmware that I'm using
