Following Take-Two’s admission that hackers had successfully unlocked Adults Only content supposedly cut from the M-rated version of Manhunt 2, California State Senator Leland Yee has called for the game to be reclassified again, while the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) has criticized the game for perpetuating “cruel, inaccurate perceptions that people who live with mental illnesses are violent.”

While multiple edits were made to revise Manhunt 2 so it would be granted a Mature rating (17+), hackers appear to have proven that the sections of the game in question were blocked but not entirely cut, allowing them to create a modified version of the title not meant for release.

“We hope that consumers will not engage in hacking or download illegally modified copies of our games. We encourage them to enjoy our games as they are meant to be played,” said Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick in a statement Thursday. However, as GamePolitics reports, Take-Two’s line of defense hasn’t been able to stop fresh waves of criticism.

“Not only should the AO rating immediately be reinstated on [Manhunt 2], the Federal Trade Commission should investigate Rockstar and the ESRB to determine how this was allowed to happen again,” said Senator Yee.

“Time and time again, the ESRB rating process fails parents. It is unconscionable that the rating board would downgrade Manhunt 2’s rating from AO to M and therefore make the game available to children. The ESRB and Rockstar continuously put profits before children.

“Parents deserve to know what, if any, content was truly removed to receive the downgraded rating. ESRB has refused to publicly disclose whether or not Rockstar divulged that such adult content could still be accessible. As if we needed more evidence, this episode further puts into question the validity of the entire rating system.

“The Manhunt 2 scandal further demonstrates the need for [California’s contested video game] law. I am hopeful that the courts will see that severe penalties are necessary for those who sell horrifically violent games to minors.”

The Gamer Gene also reports that NAMI’s executive director Mike Fitzpatrick issued a statement criticizing the title’s portrayal of the mentally ill.

“Even though some people may consider Manhunt 2 to be only a game, it unfortunately perpetuates and reinforces cruel, inaccurate perceptions that people who live with mental illnesses are violent.

“The U.S. Surgeon General has condemned such stigmatization, identifying fear of stigma as a major barrier to people getting help when they need it. The overall contribution of mental illnesses to violence in society is exceptionally small. In fact, people living with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of violence.

"We do not favor censorship, but we do ask for responsible exercise of creative rights when serious public health concerns are at issue. It is our right to demand a higher standard.”

I played the AO rated copy of Manhunt 2 a few weeks ago yet I'm not insane and I haven't killed anybody in real life. Arrest me for playing a videogame, please.

Im sorry, but as far im aware hardly anyone ever relates mental illness with violence in the public eye. They connect it more with retardation, just because a games character has a mental illness and goes around killing people doesnt mean that every person with the condition goes around doing such acts.

I mean if this was true would that mean that every games character ever made who has a condition creates a generalization of every person who has the condition in real life? So does that mean that if someone has ammnesia, they go round using psychic powers and firing guns at people (Second Sight), or are all alcoholics awesome fighters (dead or alive) or scientists (Tekken) ?

I think the people who are saying that generalizions are taking place due to this game need to wake up and see that almost every piece of media form which contains a character who has a condition is just for THAT character and has never mentioned in any of the games dialogue that every person with the same illness is exactly the same and has the EXACT same symptoms, everyone is different and reacts to things in their own way.
The people making these assumptions are the only people who are making the assumptions of every person with a similar condition is the same.

However everything about the AO content still being on the disk is appalling especially after the scandel of the hot coffee mod. Take-Two should of really sorted that out and removed the data instead of leaving it stupidly on the disk......again!

Dont get me wrong however, Manhunt is a great game.

Oh NOES, How Could they do THAT anything but THAT.

I mean come on this ill, psychotic game got into retail stores with an "M" rating that is only available to 17+ people.
It definitely needs to be recalled to slap the apropiate "AO" rating that is only available to 18+ (Meaning much, much, much, much, much more strict)

Just my 5 cents.

[/end sarcasm]

This game got way too much attention. Nice going moronic "defend the children" groups.

Yes. Human stupidity in the name of the 'greater good' or 'political correctness' never ceases to amaze me.

Its rated M for mature (17+) - "Kids" the same age can go see movies like SAW, Hostel, 300, and other bloody/violent movies.

If this sort of entertainment created psychopaths, think about how many millions of people go see popular R rated movies or buy M rated games. What are they waiting for? Why isn't every town, city, state, etc. being plagued with violence induced by violent entertainment?

Yeah, there is definitely a small percentage of scumbags who were already messed up that might get off on or be vaguely inspired by this sort of game. But that's unavoidable and not the fault of the game publishers or ESRB or anyone else related to the game.

In the end, this all could be the culmination of a perfectly orchestrated marketing scheme using controversy to create the buzz & curiosity.

All these critics "lashing out" are just opportunistic vultures jumping on the band wagon and playing right into the hands of Rockstar and others who stand to profit from the game.

Seriously, what a stupid world this is. With all of the far greater things going on in th world and in our countries/societies, its stuff like this that gets the attention just for being an easy target.

Oh ****, Manhunt 2 is out... Lets forget about real life crime, poverty, education, quality of life, environment, immigration, war, and so on and so on....

Am I the only one that thinks the world is going down the drain fast?
