Though publisher Square Enix originally lamented its lower-than-expected post-launch sales figures, Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider (http://www.joystiq.com/game/tomb-raider-2013) earned back its development costs by the end of 2013, executive producer Scot Amos toldEurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-17-tomb-raider-finally-achieved-profitability-by-the-end-of-last-year) this week.

"By the end of last year - Tomb Raider is in the black," Amos said. "We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions."

Despite its record-setting first-week performance (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/crystal-dynamics-tomb-raider-had-best-week-one-sales-in-franchi/) and sales that topped 4 million units (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/08/23/tomb-raider-worldwide-sales-exceed-4-million-units/) worldwide in the months following its launch, Tomb Raider was characterized by Square Enix as a financial disappointment. The publisher cited "weak (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/square-enix-weak-sales-tomb-raider-hitman-absolution/)" sales for Tomb Raider and other published games as factors driving its financial losses (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/square-enix-posts-134m-fiscal-net-loss-projects-profit-for-com/) for the 2013 fiscal year.

An upgraded reissue of Tomb Raider for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titledTomb Raider: Definitive Edition (http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/07/tomb-raider-definitive-edition-boasts-1080p-resolution-butter/) is due for release on January 28.
