Rockstar today launched its appeal against the BBFC's decision to refuse Manhunt 2 certification, accusing the board of putting its reputation above the interests of gamers.

Geoffrey Robertson, representing Rockstar, began the proceedings by claiming the British Board of Film Classification was a misnomer - suggesting it should instead be referred to as the British Board of Videogame Censors.

"There's no evidence that playing interactive videogames leads to a propensity to act them out in real life. We wonder why Manhunt 2 has been singled out for special treatment," he stated.

Robertson went on to accuse the BBFC of being "simply ignorant of the gaming experience" and "throwing adjectives with hyperbolic abandon at the game".

"Their reputation is not at stake; if it were we could show how, over the last century, they've been derided for some of the most stupid decisions in censorship history," he continued. "But we're not going to go down that road."

According to statistics presented by Robertson, there are 26.5 million gamers in the UK. Their average age is 28 and the gender split is 45 per cent female, 55 per cent male.

Addressing the panel from the Video Appeals Committee present to hear Rockstar's appeal Robertson said, "There you are, seven of you - not one of you has experienced, I'm told by the chairman, computer games, or are a gamer."

At this point one member of the panel interjected, stating, "That's not true. Some of us actually have played computer games." It was also confirmed that the panel did play Manhunt 2 in advance of the hearing.

Robertson described as "offensive and outrageous" the "allegation the board makes against adults in this country that they're somehow going to go and shoot or kill as a result of playing Manhunt 2.

"Millions of gamers play videogames and no crime has ever been directly attributed to them, with one exception."

The exception, Robertson explained, was the alleged connection between the original Manhunt and the murder of British teenager Stefan Pakeerah. The police later issued a statement which said Pakeerah's killer did not own the game and there was no connection.

Robertson added, "We say [Manhunt 2] has been banned not because of any likelihood it will harm gamers, but because of the likelihood it will harm the reputation of the BBFC."

The appeal is ongoing.

Make it simple... HOW Old were you when you saw your first Playboy Mag?

average age 12-17

yet We don't blame them for Teenage Pregnacy...
They are on Shelfs In Target unlike Manhunt 2

Did you know that the ratio of children being sold adult video games is exacty even with the ratio of children who sneek into R and NC 17 movies?

yet we don't blame the movie instrusry when tommy steals a car and shoots someone..

A Video game Never shows you how to load a mag with ammo... a movie does and teaches you how to prime the weapon.....

So why ban video games when we still still sell movies and Porn mags?

Since the ratio is the same in some areas and WAY MoRE in the case of playboy others... why single out one that has NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE twards it without singling out the others?

THE TRUTH HAS SPOKEN AND I WANT MY DAMN CUT ROCKSTAR!!!!

Well... yes money is a big factor.

But i believe that when it comes to games its a bit more then that. I mean, a LOT of work and money goes into building something like this, a hell of a lot more then just a magazine. Im sure the people who actually spent months/years building this game up dont want to go and see all their work censored and banned, especially for a reason which is all around us in the media and for a court case which has no link to manhunt what-so-ever.

The BBFC is just protecting their own ass.

It may be about money for the overall body, but the people who made the game probably are very devoted. If you decided to get in the field of game design, it was probably because you love video games. I like the care some companies put into their games. The heart behind some games is rather apparent, such as games like the new GOW for PSP. A lot has gone into perfecting that game. Yes, Rockstar probably just wants a big fat paycheck from there as well. But, hey, why shouldn't they get it? They made the game to sell and aren't getting to do so. I'd be upset too.

MOney is a big factor.. but look at it this way... by banning a game you can blame a game for the issues... by banning it you make proof out of BS because people will look back and say look at this game for example... IE Grand Theft Auto SA..... how many years did they blame Columbine on DOOM?! ALSO btw as you see the person got banned LOL... and to clear things up Im not "whinning" Im making a 100% valid point... people now of days are looking to point the finger somewhere and the first thing the BABY BOOMER generation and older look at are the way that video games have changed... Movies have ALWAYS been violent... look at all the old John Wayne movies.. go in there guns a blazing fist a punching arse a kickin shoot first ask questions later and slap a few women around while your at it... hell my grandfater IDOLIZED him.. up until he shot some dude for no reason just because he cut him off in trafic.. lol... ( needless to say he is freakin crazy) mentalillness has always exsisted... look at the case in 1901 when 2 kids blew up their school with dyminate... Only books existed back then... when it all comes down to the facts are this and always have been this since the days of Adam and EVE.... without constant supervision some people are messed up.. and without proper upbringing with parrents from the hippy generation who never got over it and do not believe in dicipline more and more children are messed up.. and messed up children end up messed up adults and raise even more messed up children... simple as that.. and some become lawyers, senators, or other people in high places because it becomes more and more acceptable by society.... Look at how many senators in the White house have been busted for CHILD PORN.. the same people who are making these laws... NOW I'm NOT SAYING THAT EVERY ONE OF THEM ARE BAD.. I'm just saying everytime someone in power messes up they blame someone else.. The guy who made that pedifile safe haven site which informed people on how to stalk children legaly. He was allowed to do that because no one was willing to step in and say no until society made it an issue. Yet Pedifillia still happens. We don't blame child beauty pagents for them. I'm just saying that the problem is only going to get worse due to a poor lack of parrenting in society now of day because people don't want to be sued
