Crytek's Warface: Xbox 360 Edition (http://www.joystiq.com/game/warface) enters its public beta phase today. The free-to-play shooter is powered by the company's own Cryengine technology, the same engine used in games such as Crysis 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-3) and Ryse: Son of Rome (http://www.joystiq.com/game/ryse). Players can register for the beta on the game's official site (http://www.warface.com/xbox/). The PC version of Warfacewent live for the public in October 2013 (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/10/15/crysis-devs-free-to-play-shooter-warface-opens-to-the-public/).

While the game is free for FPS fans to jump into, it is only playable by Xbox Live Gold subscribers. This continues a trend for free-to-play and subscription-based games, as both Wargaming's World of Tanks (http://www.joystiq.com/game/world-of-tanks) and the full version ofHappy Wars (http://www.joystiq.com/game/happy-wars) require a paid Xbox Live membership to play. Even the upcoming Bethesda MMO The Elder Scrolls Online (http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-elder-scrolls-online), which itself requires a monthly subscription, will need a Gold membership on Xbox One (http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/28/the-elder-scrolls-online-wont-require-ps-plus-will-require-xbo/).
