Bay attacks MS and HD-DVD

Hollywood director Michael Bay has lashed out at Microsoft and its HD-DVD format, claiming its purpose is to make other formats fail rather than succeed itself.

His angry swipe was made on the "Ask Michael Bay" sub-forum (well spotted, Kotaku) after a fan pushed him on the unavailability of his films on Blu-ray.


"What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about," fumed Bay.

"That is why Microsoft is handing out USD 100 million cheques to studios just embrace the HD-DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu-ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."

Recently we heard Blu-ray films accounted for 73 per cent of the high definition market in Europe, although the keen-eyed among you attributed it to HD-DVD being region free.

thats a crock of shite who would download a 20-40 gb film? microsoft is not powerful enough itself to make both formats fail

Considering Microsoft co-developed HD DVD, and invested money in it, id say Bay is a idiot!

I think Michael Bay is not reading the facts and is acting more ignorant than anything else.

First of all, Blu-Ray is a Sony product. Microsoft actually supports the drive on PCs running Windows. It's a good business. Sony PCs uses MS Windows.

On the single player or console arena, both are rivals. It doesn't make sense for Sony that Xbox 360 can use an external BR drive. No one will buy a PS3 if that happens. Instead, MS decide to bring Toshiba's cheaper solution for people who want to experience HD video, but not incorporate it on the console.

The results are clear. MS console's still cheaper than Sony's and they doesn't force you to buy an HDTV to play games or movies.

yup, only reason I have for not getting BR is that I know id have to shell out a crapload later on for a BR burner to back up my movies.
